I need help accessing my Acomdata Hard-drive. It is several years old and has data on it I need. When I plug it into the USB port, I get the following error message: "Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source."  The Acomdata model number is: BIO500UE, Serial Number: B1002064. I have had this hard-drive for about 8 or 9 years. It worked on my old computer operating system, but not on my current OS which is Windows 7. Thank you for your time and response.

Hi BoyceO, and welcome to the WTT forums.

Elderly USB devices can tend to present certain problems and an external hard drive that is 8 or 9 years old certainly comes into that description.

1 As the hard drive was designed to work on computers running Windows 2000, Win XP and also Win Vista, it would be worthwhile trying it on each of these machines, until you get a result….. start with XP and don't forget to try different USB ports (both at the front and also the back of the computer concerned ) the same goes for trying all the different ports on your Win 7 machine and also whilst booted into safe mode.

2 If you don't have access to older machines running those operating systems then its worth asking some of your chums to help as maybe some of them will the older operating system on their computers.

3 If you still can't get a computer to recognise your external hard drive then its worth while booting into a live distro of Linux (Linux Puppy is good) and seeing if Puppy can access it satisfactorily.

Linux Puppy available from here:

Post back and let us know how you get on.
