Hi, my external hd has developed a fault and doesn't appear readable from my pc - is there any other way I can access this unit and transfer the stored data?
Thank you.
Hi, 2 things come to mind, first if possible remove the drive from the external caddie, then add it directly to the system internally (using obvious precautions etc) as a slave (at least if it's ide), see if the system sees the drive then, if it does it may be the caddie or cable at fault as opposed to the drive itself, if this lets you see the drive you can easily drag what you want off the drive and\or get a new caddie.
The other option depends on one thing, and thats the drive can be seen, if nothing can see the drive you're stuffed, got one here from a mate like that, and the only solution if this happens is professional recovery where they take the drive apart, but it ain't cheap, but if the drive can be seen, but not accessed then get Puppy Linux and boot to that, you can mount the drive(s), it will not change anything on the systems as it runs in the ram, not the drive, but the beauty is if it can access the drive, you can save you're data to the main system drive, so see if the drive can be seen first, then go from there I suggest.
Thank you for the reply … I will give that a go. I'm not doing the professional recovery thing but will add it internally (hadn't thought of that) … thanks again.
