I have Windows 7 on a HP Pavilion g series; which gets hotter than Hades, so I prop it up to give it more air. The day the color went whacky, I had it on for several hours.
Have you cleaned out the vents with compressed air? If it continues to run real hot you may need to disassemble it to give it a thorough cleaning and maybe replace the thermal paste on the CPU and Video chips.
Are you sure the fan is working? Maybe it died and needs replacing?
Huh.. This is what concerns me. A change in default colors is one thing. A random "psychedelic" change indicates something more than just default colors or a theme. Associated with overheating, it indicates more of a hardware problem. You must clean the system so it stays cool. There is probably only a few things that are going to cause this:
Corrupt or missing video drivers <- Likely if you have one of those stupid driver updater virus err programs.
Incorrect screen resolution / color depth settings.
Bad hardware or a bad connection on RAM chips or LCD screen. <- Most likely issue
