I have a dvd I made from the Win 8 Pro x64 iso - I think. I wanted to be sure so inserted the dvd in and the auto play did not give me an opportunity to view files so I could be sure of the contents.

I have my Win 8.1 auto play set to 'ask me every time'.

How can I check the contents and why is auto play not opening?

Thank you

I can't explain why that happens, although my guess is it's a security feature of the OS, but autorun is often suggested to be turned off, because when infected media is inserted, it allows it to access the system, but accessing the disk should be easy, as it's supposed to be an install disk you can try and see if it launches by:-

1. double clicking on it, if it works the program should load, needless to say once you see it load, exit without saving anything, or you could mess up your current install, but it would show you that it appears to be working.

2. The other way is to simply open it, and look at it's contents, this will let you see every file on the disk, sometimes double clicking on the drive opens a prompt, asking do you want to view or run the content, other times you can usually right click on the drive, then select Explore, although looking at my 8.1 it say's Open in New Window, that usually opens another window displaying the contents of the drive, but looking at my 8.1 again, here is a screenshot of the right click options, the marked options are the options explained here, hope it helps.

Hey Alan

When the disc is inserted, nothing appears and it begins to run. I don't think I can stop it and have the chance to look inside like a regular dvd w/o messing up the system.

My friend who sent me the disc was kind enough to confirm that it was indeed what I need, 8.1 pro x64. He is a good guy like that.

How to read the dvd will have to remain a puzzle. Does it happen on any of your os discs? But remember not to mess up your system.

Thanks for the pik and info.

Always appreciated.

Peter

Well just looked at the disk I use and only the blue options shown above appear, by the sound of it your disk is trying to load, maybe it just needs time ?

But to view the disk you need to need to be in what we are used to calling the My Computer, I think it's My PC now, from there you can see ALL your drives, and in there you can right click on your optical drive, and should see the options above in some form or another depending on your system\disks.

There is 1 possibility if your system won't see the disk, try it in a different PC, theres a small chance that your drive does not like that "brand" of media, and brand can be varied, because they all buy in bulk as far as I know, and put their own label on them, so it's possible the disk although having the same "label" on it, could actually be a different disk than normal, probably most noticeable in the bargain basement range of disks, at least this is my understanding of it all from over the years, not sure if that helps at all.

I just wrote you a nice long letter and when it would not post - I waited about 3 minutes I clicked refresh and it disappeared.

So I am not going to do it again.

I will leave the disc as is.

NVIDIA and MS had the usual conflict last night.

I lost all my restore points when Macrium restored my system. Both MS and Macrium use the Volume Shadow copy service yet I think my points being removed was a glitch or a fault in Macrium.

If anyone on the forum has the paid edition could you ask if the restore points should be deleted when there is a restore of the system?

Storm coming Alan so more groceries and turn up the heat.

don't use macrium but i can tell you that any restore points created after you made the image you used to do a restore will definitely be gone, don't forget an image is an exact copy of your hard drive AT THE TIME IT WAS MADE so everything that changes after that point in time like restore points, updates, etc are not going to be there when you use it to do a restore.

I see. I thought the restore would bring me back to when I had restore points and the snapshot was taken. My logic was if points existed when the image took place, they would be there when I recovered to that very time.

that's correct from my understanding as well. you saying the restore points from the time the image was made are gone as well and not just any newer ones that i'd expect not to be there?

this might explain it :- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301224

seems it is not a macrium problem but just normal windows behaviour in the way it handles restore points. eg.

A restore point reaches an age of 90 days. The restore point is then deleted because 90 days is the default time to live.

I concur with terry1966, as it is an EXACT image, what you save is what you get back, to safeguard falling so far back when you restore, you need to get in the habit of doing incremental backups, these are added to your image, so you will restore to the point that the last incremental backup was done, these backups are simply small additions.

The software only saves the bits that are new, or changed, it saves doing a complete backup each time (monthly perhaps ?)each time, it just adds to what is already there, needless to say only do this incremental backup if you are sure all is well, otherwise you will end up putting the problem back onto the system if you used the backup to restore again.

I hate losing replies like that, totally gutting when you've built up an extensive response to lose it, but the latest Nvidia drivers seem to be sorted now, at least they are stable for me, see if v332.21 works for you, well check if thats what your using first, if it's before that then you will get problems, but this one has been good for me.

But storms aren't near enough to me to get in the way luckily, feel sorry for those in the bad areas though.

@Alan - I sent you a link to explain that Windows is downloading the NVIDIA updates from now on.

The link will take you to the NVIDIA site with a comprehensive explanation. I sent it from the NVIDIA site with my default email client but it did not appear here unfortunately.

@terry - As usual you are correct and thorough. I appreciate your correcting my understanding of the situation.
