The most common issue when some disks work and others don't is that the head is dirty, such a drive has 2 heads, one for CD and one for DVD, hence playing CD and not DVD, but the fact you can play some DVDs makes this questionable in this case, but it may be the early stages of it therefore only affecting some disks currently, to that end it can't hurt to buy a lens cleaner, many supermarkets do them these days, it comes in the form of a disk with some brushes on one side, run this a few times and see if it helps. Now not sure where you found that wizard, can't find it in mine lol, I was going to compare the results to see if it showed anything, but I have never seen a report like that before so have no idea about it's info, at least clearly anyway, so to that end we can try reinstalling the drive to see if that can reset any possible hardware issue. So go into your device manager, expand the drive section, right click on it and select uninstall, once it's complete it will probably ask for a reboot, if not do it anyway, then when it loads you will get the hardware found wizard come up, allow this to auto install the drive again, the hope is this will reset any hardware issue, but dirty lens is the most common cause in my experience, hope this helps.
this is the message i get from wmp Windows media player cannot play this dvd Because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your dvd drive, decoder and video card..try installing an updatetd driver for your video card my dvd is legitimate..i bought it a while back..my windows is genuine…i just don't know anymore…help!!!
Well I ran the test and got slightly different results to you, for starters it's suggested to have AutoPlay turned off, it is a common cause of getting infections when inserting infected media, the other difference I saw was your drive is not recognised (0 = Unknown), mine is picked up as Drive 5 (5 = RAM Disk), but not sure if this has any bearing or not, here is my scan for comparison, I will log off shortly and run it again to see what it shows then:-

Now a couple of questions, has this disk played without issue prior to this ?
Had you done\changed ANYTHING prior to this happening ? this includes windows updates etc.
Have you tried a different media player to check if it's a compatibility thing ? I suggest VLC as it plays pretty much anything you throw at it.
See if any of this shows anything.

*edit
OK rebooted a couple of more times and scans, and rather than post the entire log, I will add the bits that vary from yours:-

Result [HKLM\…\Policies!NoDriveTypeAutorun]: OK {Present}

This occurs in the 1st part of the test.
And the end of the test is slightly different as well:-

Result: This AutoPlay setting cannot be fixed. Either the device is malfunctioning, or the wizard cannot determine the problem.
>> Repair << [Autoplay V2 Event]
Step: No steps to take.
Result: This AutoPlay setting cannot be fixed. Either the device is malfunctioning, or the wizard cannot determine the problem.

>> Required action: The wizard found problems but cannot fix them -> None

So I'm not convinced about there being a technical configuration issue being behind this, more a hardware failure or compatibility issue, when you try the suggestion and answer the questions there may be another thing to check out, but if this worked previously I'm not sure it will make a difference, but see how you go with all this.
thanks again for your input…. i've used this laptop for my workout videos' before…it has been reformatted but i'm pretty sure it worked fine afterwards updates..yes..there have been a few…and yes i have tried other media formats vlc beeing one of them ..
Well it can't hurt to check that you have the required codecs for this disk, you can use GSpot (not the sexual term), or Sherlock the Codec Detective, run them, tell them where the disk is, then see if they say you have the codec required or not, my fear is that because the drive\system refuse to see the disk this may not work, but it's worth a try, and try getting and running the cleaner disk, it may take several cycles, no guarantee it will work, but can't hurt to try, see how this goes.
thanks again for ur input…ur as persistant as i am…lol…tried the gspot…results…status ready…174 codecs loaded!! arghhh huh?!
I haven't used that very often as it's only at a time like this you need it to check something out, but what your looking for is not a list of what you have, your looking for any reference to a missing codec (listed in red IIRC), possibly on the right, if it's all green then you have the codec(s) you need for that disk, which basically points the finger back at a hardware failure again, have you tried the lens cleaner yet ? Also another very quick test, if you have access to another drive simply swap them round for a test, if the film plays you have confirmation of a drive gone bad.
i have tried the cleaning..to no avail….not sure how to read the codecs report…but it says no codecs missing!!!! i can borrow an external cd//dvd player from someone and try that out..is that what u mean.?? codecs Codec Reporting Utility Output Text ———————————– Date and Time: 01-Feb-2010 09:33:46 System Information —————— Operating System = Microsoft ® Windows XP Professional (5.01.2600) CPU Descriptor = Intel® Pentium® M processor 1.70GHz CPU Clock Speed = 877 Mhz. this is the message i get from wmp

Windows media player cannot play this dvd
Because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your dvd drive, decoder and video card..try installing an updatetd driver for your video card

my dvd is legitimate..i bought it a while back..my windows is genuine…i just don't know anymore…help!!!

I had this error once on XP, it was because i had set something set wrong in my nVidia control panel (as i have an nVidia card)

unfortunately, i can't remember what was wrong. In the mean time, make sure you have the little checkbox in WMP ticked (the one that says "Download Codecs Automatically"), it's in Options > Player tab

Hope this helps

There is a big risk with having that option checked, codecs are often used as a medium to infect unsuspecting users, so if you were to download a media file, it may be clean to scan so you think it's a safe file to play, but when you play the file it asks for a codec to play properly, and thats when you get caught out, with that option selected it will automatically download the infected codec and bang, your infected, it is far safer to manually get the codec then you know and can scan it prior to use.
The safest way is to turn OFF that option, then get a media player that has all the codecs you need, VLC will play pretty much anything you throw at it, but there is always the odd file that may not want to play nice, a lot of people always say to use the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack which contains everything you need, personally I don't like it, it uses the old style players, but it is a very comprehensive pack that should take care of anything you have.

Then if you've run the lens cleaner several times it sounds like it's too dirty for the cleaner to handle, to that end an external player is fine, all we want to see is if your system can play that disk, if that disk runs OK in another drive that you can connect to your system then it shows your original drive as being the problem, as best as one can tell anyway, the good news is the drives are so cheap these days it's not going to cost the earth, so if you can attach an external drive that would be a great help in seeing whats going on.
Now if the disk plays in the other drive then the original drive is the weak link, if it still wont play then see if it plays on another system, just to check the disk itself, hopefully this will show something thats the weak link.

Oops, sorry, i did't realise there was such a big risk with that little checkbox.

Mine is now UNchecked…

Thanks for the info.
NP, I used to do exactly as you had done before I saw\heard this myself, it's all about passing on what we pick up as we go along, then everyone can learn new tricks etc as the knowledge grows.
8210guy…i got it going….but i still don't get it k know how i said when i put my dvd in…it opens up to those three file folders!!! well i went into the third folder the one called video_ts and it has a bunch of stuff in right (wish i could stick a picture in here) but anyhow the very first icon in that file folder is an icon of a wmp that is also video_ts, when i click on this one…it runs!!!! i'm sooo confused….glad it's working..but..how come?
