Hello

I noticed I cannot paste a sentence from a friend to What the tech.

I have a problem/puzzle for you.

If you see my attachment you will see the number three. I was told every time the network adapter gets reinstalled for a number of reasons I cannot remember it increments the number . It has done so for years and is an annoyance.

If this is so at least I have an explanation. if this can be fixed without maneuvering the registry I would like to do so.

Thank you

Peter

To change from network 3 to just network type the following in the search box; How to change network name in Windows 8.

I tried everyway I could to paste the links I have but was unable to. Could someone lease tell me how to do this with Win 8.1 so I can better paste the information required to address this information.

It worked successfully for me and I wish to share it with others who may have the same problem.

Thank you

Peter

To do this the easy way:

Quite often, over time your network name changes from

Local Area Connection

to

Local Area Connection 2 or 3 or 4 ....

It really doesn't make any different to your computer, but if you're a neat freak, then you can rename it back by entering the following in a Command Prompt window.

netsh interface set interface name="Local Area Connection 2" newname="Local Area Connection"

Actually, you could make newname anything you want, like "Fred's Internet" or "My Network Connection".

To see what it is currently set to, enter:

netsh interface show interface

Rich

I have a lot of information regarding renaming the network but cannot figure out how to copy and paste to the new WTT set up. I see the little "paste from Word" but it brings up a clipboard option.

How do you copy and paste here? I look forward to knowing this as I use the site a lot. I may try with Firefox instead of MSIE 11.

Also, thank you for your information regarding renaming.

I have been running secpol.msc>network list manage policies>double click my network on the right, and type the new name in the box.

1-I tried FireFox by both running netsh interface show interface then as a command prompt but neither worked.

What am I doing wrong?

2-With FireFox it says clipboard cannot be accessed and to paste in a little box.

With MSIE 11 nothing happens except it says the clipboard can or cannot be accessed. i tried both ways with no results.

I think I am in a can of worms here as there are a couple of issues.

*I keep getting a notification with MSIE 11 that protection mode is enabled and I have to click to run control or not to. It may have to do with this site now.

Sorry to unload so many things but they are all happening at once -I guess one led to the next etc.

I think this may be a browser issue except the cmd prmpt issue failed too..

1. Open a Elevated Command Prompt.

Click Start, type cmd then right click on cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator.

2. Try netsh interface show interface
3. Try netsh interface set interface name="Local Area Connection 2" newname="Local Area Connection"
