I am looking for a document that is no longer in my current document file. I am looking in my external hard drive backup, but since I have never done this before, I was wondering what I should be looking for. I went to program files, "blue", and I didn't see "documents" listed. On the left in "red", are those just my current documents or are they the ones on the backup drive? Because I tried looking at them and they are exactly the same documents I have currently. Am I making any sense???? Thanks. :) 📎Capture_documents.PNG
Not totally sure I follow exactly, but if you have saved the document on an external drive, those locations will not have what you need, you need to connect your external drive, then open that drive under your Computer where the hard drives are listed, but it wont show until it is connected, if there are lots of files, try a search of that drive, in the window it opens in, there is a search box, just type the filename in there and hit return, if you don't know the file name, but know it's a specific file type, eg *.doc and it should list all that file type, from there you will hopefully remember the file name as you look and find what you need, I hope this is what's needed, if not reply with more details and we can try and see what I may have missed.
The screenshot was with my external hard drive connected.. I am sorry I was confusing, but I didn't know how to explain it. You did understand what I was asking. I will try that. Thanks.
Yeah, it's not there. I have deleted my backups from a couple of months ago and that is where it probably was. I don't know how I lost it. There for awhile, I lost stuff. Like two programs just disappeared and I had to download them again. That is probably what happened to it. Thanks.
Right then there may be some crossover here, my initial comments were aimed at your marking the Program folders, those relate to your installed system only, and the Documents which is on your C\installed to drive, when a file is saved to an external source, those circled locations above will not be valid, as you must go directly to that specific external device directly to find the file you need, in your case it would be the My Passport drive with the drive letter e. But this drive letter can change depending on other external devices connected, so the drive letter may change at times, but it's name will stay the same unless you change it, then as I described above, you can search that specific location, and everything within it by using the search box at the top right corner of the window, and if the file name eludes you, search using a "wildcard" by typing *.doc (* is the wildcard code, for use when you can't think of the actual file name), then just use the file extension you're looking for, it will list all files of that type, from which you should find what you need. But it's easy to overlook a file, more so when it's been awhile since you used it, and is the reason why that hardcore users say to make numerous back up's, and to various devices\locations, then if 1 goes, you have the others, but although this is great advice for those in situations that require such cover, eg a business, or such files that can not afford to be lost, like that irreplaceable photo or the like, and as time goes by, it highlights just how important clear labeling can be a benefit, eg include the date in the title, and specific key words likely to jog your memory as soon as you see them, eg 16th birthday and the like, hope this helps for the future at least.
