I went onto Windows Update to update programs or what ever you do on windows update because i hadnt updated in a while and i found it was not working at it came up with an error message " windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. you may need t restart your computer" i checked in services and it wasnt there and then i went on the interent for help and it said it could be because windows defender isnt on so i went to windows defender and i clicked start now which came up with an error message of "The specific service does not exist as an installed service. (Error code: 0x80070424) i looked in services for that as well and it wasnt there but i use mcaffe scanner so i dont expect it to be on but windows updates still normally runs normally even if windows defender is on and mcaffe is on. help!!!!!

If not, run System File Checker

Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories. Right Click the 'Command Prompt' item and click the 'Run As Administrator' option.
in the elevated Command Prompt type: sfc /scannow <– notice the required space between "c" and "/"

where would it be in? its not in services but wont using malware hurt my computer?
windows update is now working again but windows defender is still off and says that its been deleted when i try to turn it off. is this a problem?
Hi again hannah.b,

Good to read that your Microsoft Updates is now working as it should.

BiTS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) is a Service which is included alphabetically in the list of Microsoft Services.
It apparently is there and working properly, because otherwise your Microsoft Updates would not be working.

Had it been missing, or had Microsoft Updates continued to not be working, then that might have been an indication of possible infection, which would require assistance from our Malware Removal specialists. That's why I posted the information.

Since Microsoft Updates is now working, it is a non-issue and no worry.

As to McAfee and Windows Defender…

Running certain anti-virus products such as McAfee will automatically turn-off the native Windows Defender.
This is not thought to be a problem, since McAfee is on the job protecting your machine.
