Hi, I run an Internet radio station and have now been infected by something called, I think, winback.exe.
Here's some of what I know.
Both time Symantec AntiVirus has reported an issue with a file called "status.dat" in the directory "c:\windows\system32\wbem\tmp. I think the first time the file was quarantined, I'm certain the second time (today), Symantec reported the file was deleted.
After the Symantec report, a new Windows service is installed called "Security-Services" and that service becomes a dependency for the Windows "Server" service (which after a clean reinstall has no dependencies). After a clean reinstall there is a Windows service called "Security Center", which I no longer see listed in the list of services.
In my Windows Vista Network and Sharing Center, the Network Discovery option has been turned off (it was turned on before this mess with winback.exe started).
Based on what happened the first time this happened, if I restart this computer the Server service cannot be turned on. If the "Security-Services" service is enabled on startup, I'll see a "Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed" error if I try to start the Server service. If I've disabled the "Security-Services" service on startup, I'll see a "Windows could not start the Server on Local Computer . . . Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start" error when trying to start the Server service.
This then becomes a problem that no computer on the Internet can see this computer which runs a website and more importantly an Internet radio station using SAM Broadcaster to stream and ShoutCAST to relay to an external streaming host.
Here's a HiJack Log report:
