Hi,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi Tomk,

Thanks for having a look.

ATF Removed about 100MB of Junk files

Malware says that did not find anything suspect. Please see the file below:

My Laptop does not perform windows updates. Nor does windows Defender.

When i attempt to update windows updates, the window will comeup, go white and then do nothing.

Windows Defender will say that it is searching, but once again do nothing.

Also, occasionally, IE7 will change its look and feel to a basic one, similar to windows 98 and freeze. Have to reboot to get it back to normal.

Please see the new HJT log below.

Thanks,

Lotus
lotus lion,

Let's dig deeper. Please remember as you run various tools that on Vista you need to run them as Administrator.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Hi Tomk,

I prepared to run combofix by shutting down Windows defender and my Anti-virus, Avira, but Combo-fix is adament that Avira is still running.

I ensured that i followed the instructions detailed in:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

But it is still saying that it is running.

I think i have canceled the Combo-fix for the moment.

Could you possibly advise?

Thanks,

Lotus
lotus lion,

Instead of running ComboFix by double clicking on the icon, please:
Go to [external image: Posted Image] -> Run -> copy/paste the following single line command in the runbox & click OK

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

[external image: Posted Image]
Hi Tomk, For whatever reason, Avira Does not Die! I ran combofix with the switch given as described, but it brought up the same error message. I then tried disabling it from startup in Msconfig and Services.msc But it does not make any difference. I have checked in the TaskManager and there are no associated processes running, even under processes for all Users. Do you think i should try it anyway? Thanks, Lotus
Hi Tomk,

Please see my ComboFix Report below.

lotus lion,

You appear to still have remnants from an old Symantec (Norton) install:

Use the link below to see how to run the Norton Removal Tool
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…005033108162039

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::

    Folder::

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
    "AppInit_DLLs"=""
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecAntiVirus]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecFirewall]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{1dff1807-1463-11dd-86e8-001a80b7f0cc}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{62ad0e81-1817-11dd-8404-001a80b7f0cc}]

    Driver::
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Then

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Hi,

I have performed the ComboFix.

When i went to the Kaspersky website, it would not let me proceed .
It says that i need Java 1.6 to continue, but i am pretty sure i have the latest version.
It also asks to install an active x control but does not let me install it as the publisher cannot be verified

For the moment:

lotus lion,

If Kaspersky doesn't want to cooperate, let's do this instead.

I need you to run the following scan: Eset Online Scanner

  • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use
  • Click the Start button.
  • Now click the Install button.
  • Click Start. The scanner engine will initialize and update.
  • Do Not place a check mark in the box beside Remove found threats.
  • Click the Scan button. The scan will now run, please be patient.
  • When the scan finishes click the Details tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the C:\ProgramFiles\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt into your next reply.
Hi Tomk,

Apologies for the delay.

I went to: http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/scanner.php?i_agree=14

But it would not lt me run the application as according to its system, i am not an administrator.

As far as i can tell, i am (Control Panel\User Accounts, My Account name has Administrator on it)

I have also dropped the security level to run Activex without prompt, but no joy.

I cannot even check properly as i cannot locate an Admin Group in Manage, or any place for the matter.

Could you help?

Thanks,

Lotus
lotus lion,

That threw me for a second there. It turns out it's a Vista thing.

On a Vista machine, in order to run as Administrator you need to be running your browser as an Administrator. You do that by closing your browser, then Right click on your browser Icon and select Run as Administrator. Your browser should start up and you should be able to go to the website and run the scan.

btw Avira AV did come across a few viruses whilst the scan was being performed. Thought you may have wanted to have a look at it?

The log is below, but was not sure where you wanted to start from so done for today and the end of yesterday.
If you do need any more information, let me know.
