I am not sure, if this is the correct forum. I have a Dell Latitude Laptop recovery CDs. I also have Dell GX280 PC. I am having virus trouble with the PC, and I want to restore to factory settings. Unfortunately, I do not have recover cds for my Dell PC. My question, is can I use my Dell Latitude cds?
Maybe. And it depends upon what you mean by "recovery CD" If you are referring to a Windows XP/Vista/7 disk which was provided by Dell and marked with their brand logo… That Disk will probably install the Windows Operating System "if" it is the exact same Windows and version as used on your PC. For instance, XP Home on both machines, or XP Pro on both machines. If you are referring to a "Driver CD" support disk, then those drivers will be entirely different for your PC. You would therefore need to go to the Dell website, insert your Service Tag number, and then navigate to Support - Drivers and Downloads where you can get the specific chipset and drivers for that particular PC. If you are referring to "recovery CD" disks which you created yourself in response to Dell's new owner introductory instructions and prompt, then those will not work for your PC. If it comes down to it, Dell will sell you a replacement copy of the Dell Windows operating system disk, usually for about $30 US. Best Regards
Based off of your question, you cannot use the Laptops Recovery Disk Set to restore the Desktop computer as those disk contained specialized software and hardware drivers. It is recommend your contact Dell for the proper Recovery Disk Set for you Dell Optiplex GX280 Desktop computer.
Alternatively, You can install a retail version of the Operating System once you have good to the manufacturer's site to acquire the drivers for each component and any additional software or utilities and saved those to some kind of external storage media. (i,e, Flash Drive, CD, External HDD, etc)
Actually I posted a support help at Dell Support Forum, and issue is solved.

Answer: You can use the disc but won't need the key - XP is pre-activated (as long as it's a Dell CD).

Still make sure you have acquired the proper drivers for each component.

Is there an online scanner or Dell update scan, which will tell me, if I am missing any drivers. I am currently using same Dell after using that Laptop recovery CD. I just downloaded the BiOS, video, audio, graphics.

Stech, Looks like you've already found and used a Dell driver scanner ? Other third-party driver update scanners are more fluff than substance. They get paid via adword-click count and therefore will tell you you need to update, even when the available update has no benefit for your machine. Have a look in your Device Manager. If you see any red or yellow warnings or black exclamation points, then that drive needs attention and probably reinstallation or update. Drivers for your Dell hardware were designed to allow your Dell to work properly. Later versions or updates may have extra coding to "solve" a problem that appears only in an HP or Sony machine. You would therefore not need the update. As to Drivers… if your machine is performing correctly you don't need to update the drivers. Old saying applies here: If it ain't broke, don't be fixin' on it.
