Hello marky boy,
HERE is a link for you to follow regarding your clean install.
You will need to have your Windows XP/SP2 CD and your activation key handy.
Unless you have imaged your HD to an external HD it is better to download and install all software programs from scratch that you want after the clean install of your Windows XP.
By image backup I mean Acronis True image or Ghost image
I run both on different computers and although they cost money, they are certainly a good way of backing up all your systems HD for a speedy and true recovery. Very cost affective really when you can be up and running in half an hour if the worst should happen to your HD.
Hope this helps and do post back for more information - we are happy to help.
kind regards,

I wish you had come here before attempting a reformat for that should ALWAYS be the last resort effort in correcting a problem. When you format your boot drive, you lose:
- All hardware drivers, including:
- Drivers specific to XP SP2 (or Vista),
- Drivers specific to your motherboard, such as those needed for on-board graphics, sound, networking, USB I/O, SATA/SCSI controllers, etc.
- Data files - including,
- Documents, spreadsheets, databases, etc.,
- Photos, music/audio and video,
- Email (if using Outlook Express, Outlook or so other "client" (PC) based email program), as well as any saved contacts, appointments, and notes,
- Favorites/Bookmarks
- Downloaded programs and updates to them, including all your required security applications,
- Custom configurations, for Windows and all other programs,
- Security patches and updates end up being months, or even years behind!
See Dell KB Article 336966. Note the summary:is there a easy way of returning a dell pc back to the day you bought it?
This article describes how to return your computer software to the exact condition it was in when it originally shipped from the Dell factory using PC Restore for Windows XP or Dell Image Restore for Windows Vista.

Have you tried to disable the add-ins in IE and see what happens?
As for your keypad, that may indicate a driver - any errors in Device Manager? Does the numlock light change when you hit the key?
marky boy

Try another browser? FireFox is a good choice. See if it fails there. If not then we know it's a IE6 or IE7 (which do you use) problem and can work on fixing it.
marky boy
yes pal it works with firefox.
so theres a problem with IE7. must admit since format it does nt work as well, does nt fully download pages at times…
does that mean i carry on using firefox and bin IE7
sorry a bit green at all this.
thanks mark.

Actually, using FireFox is a big plus as far as security and malware prevention is concerned, so continue using it as your regular browser by all means. There are many addons you can use to do things IE only dreams of
Would still be good to fix IE7 though. Best thing to do at this point is to uninstall it. When you do this, IE6 will become your browser. If that works okay then I would not reinstall IE7 unless it has some feature you just can't live without.
To uninstall IE7, open Add or Remove Programs. Check the "Show updates" box at the top. Scroll down to Windows Internet Explorer 7 and remove it. When done, you should have IE6 back.
Next, go to the Windows Update site. Uncheck the "Windows Internet Explorer 7.0 for Windows XP" update.
Check the "Don't show this update again" box that appears below the details.
Click on the "Review and Install Updates" link. This seems to be what really locks in the change.
You should see a Important - You've hidden important updates yadda yadda stuff.
That should stop Windows Update from bugging you about installing IE7.
If IE7 Uninstall doesn't work, try using a utility program called "CCleaner". It not only cleans your system but also has an option to uninstall unwanted programs from your PC. Install and start CCleaner. On the left Navigation Pane you'll find a button labeled "Tools", click on it to find IE7, that's it! CCleaner is available here: FREE CCleaner
