I am using a Toshiba laptop: Satellite L455D-S5976 with Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit. The last couple times I shut it down, the shutdown screen hung there. I finally had to unplug it and wait for the battery to die.
Hi donggone,
Sorry to hear about the laptop shutting down problem,
Here are some thoughts for your consideration:

1 Make sure that you are following the correct shut down procedure…

2 Never attempt to shut down whilst Windows updates are installing…

3 Close all open Programs before attempting to shut down.

The last couple times I shut it down, the shutdown screen hung there. I finally had to unplug it and wait for the battery to die.

Trying a "shut down" in this way is NOT a good idea…
If it happens again (fails to shut down properly) then you can force a shutdown by pressing and holding in the "Power on" button for 30 seconds…….
the screen will go blank and then if you wait for 5 minutes, you should be able to start up again in the usual way (just one short press on the "power on button")
If the shut down problem happens frequently then post back with details of anything that has changed recently that may have caused the issue….. ie:
new software or hardware added, Updates performed or installed (including Windows Updates), drivers reinstalled etc. we will need to try and get to the root of the issue as forcing a shutdown as detailed above is OK if no other method works but should not become your regular way of shutting down as there is a real and siognificant danger of data loss….

Finally make sure sure back up is comprehensive contains everything on your computer that is important to you ( stuff you would not want to lose permanently) easily reproduced and with at least one copy kept safe on removable media offsite.
