When shutting down or attempting to restart, the computer does nothing. in fact, i can still run programs. I've had to shut down/reset by holding down the power button for several seconds. This is for my computer at work.
Hey:

I downloaded & ran the 3.2 version of clean up, since i don't know whether i have windows xp pro 64 bit or 32 bit. How do you tell?

Also, i couldn't figure out how to choose only the folders i want cleaned. How do you do that?

One more IE related issue…many (but not every) times I click on a link that opens a new window, the new window says that the website could not be found. If i close it and enter the target URL, it goes there just fine. i imagine it's some security setting somewhere. any ideas on how to fix this?

The computer did reboot with no problems and much faster, too!

Okay. here's the post-clean up log:

thanks!
By default, your computer system keeps a DNS resolver cache which stores the IP address attached to frequently used DNS names (and Internet URLs, which are essentially the same thing). This enables your system to bring up frequently accessed web pages quickly, without the need to first consult a chain of DNS servers on the Internet to find out what IP address is associated with. By using the 'ipconfig /flushdns' command, you delete the contents of the DNS resolver cache, meaning that your system will now recheck its settings to see where it should be going to get DNS addresses. To open a command prompt, click Start, point to All programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command prompt. ipconfig /flushdns <<
Great. Thanks eagle. how did the log look? (don't mean to be pushy; if you haven't had a chance to look at it yet, that's cool). Also, what about the clean up questions. Thanks again. jeff p.s. our work server is a compaq that is running MS Small Business Server 2003.

I downloaded & ran the 3.2 version of clean up, since i don't know whether i have windows xp pro 64 bit or 32 bit. How do you tell?

Right click on my computer and check properties.

i couldn't figure out how to choose only the folders i want cleaned.

click options

then click check fixed.

Same command prompt for the server. :)

Sorry some times I get busy and skip over some of the questions. ;)
But I do try to answer all of the before we are done. :D

I'd like to have you run a scan.
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")
Thanks for the flushdns info. I'll see if that helps.

For the 32 v. 64 bit version of Win XP Pro, i already looked in computer properties, but can't find it in there. could you be more specific? (this was related to using CleanUp 4 or 3.2).

First, I'm including the ewido file. Please note that this computer was reloaded in the last 6 weeks. The files in c:\oldfiles are what used to be on the machine in case there might be something we needed to find but hadn't copied somwhere else. The f:\ drive is actually a c:\ from another computer that died. I access it from time to time. It still has all of it's windows files, etc. If I changed some things, my computer could boot off of the f:\ drive.

Okay, here is the ewido file.

Thanks!
With respect to ewido, would you suggest keeping it? allow guard to run in the background, even with everything else i have running? I can't figure out how the guard starts up at bootup…nothing in the start folder and nothing in msconfig. just curious.
I try not to advise on programs that you have to pay for, I do find it useful for helping users clean there PC.
If you were to get infected again you may need to pay for it :) to use it again.

There are free programs that may be as good. Having not to use them I really can say which is better. I do use a program called Wormguard.

Please read up on how to secure you PC here
FYI, the ewido program downloads as ewido plus, which you can use for 14 days. After that, the "plus" parts inactivate, but you can continue to use whatever is left. I inherited the computer at work. I have it pretty well protected now, although i am having that shut down problem. Thanks again. Hope the ewido log and HJT log will show something that will help. have a good night. putting my 3 yr old to bed. jeffc4442
sorry for the delay. swamped yesterday. here's the ewido log: ——————————————————— ewido security suite - Scan report ——————————————————— + Created on: 1:39:32 PM, 9/29/2005 + Report-Checksum: 8C181732 + Scan result: No infected objects found. ::Report End

For the 32 v. 64 bit version of Win XP Pro, i already looked in computer properties, but can't find it in there. could you be more specific? (this was related to using CleanUp 4 or 3.2).

Sence I don't have XP pro, not really sure but you may get more info here.

But I belive it would be an up grade that you would have made.
