i downloaded real video downloader which comes with a bounce of unnessary files. while downloading the program i must have missed the option that said not to d/l all that stuff. well i did and it is all over my desktop. i tried using the uninstaller that came with it but i did not have the proper program to open its .dll file. i was able to find one, openfreely.com but i am having trouble finding and opening the file. i had also d/l a microsoft midtown madness trial from pc world, it is not working either, i cant find where it d/l. it directed me to a folder that was empty.
so i basically just need a program that can remove any and or everthing no preferance, or if you coluld identify the files i need removed with a scan that would be helpflul also.
Installing a program shouldn't put files all over your desktop. Are you sure you didn't decompress a .zip file onto your desktop? Or, install the program onto your desktop, rather than into program files where it belongs by default?
Have you tried using system restore to restore your computer to a time prior to installing this un-necessary software?
After that, hold your CTRL key and click the icons/files you want off your desktop so that they are all highlighted, and then delete them. Thats pretty much it. If you got other junk in other places, delete it. There ins't an "undo" for putting files all over the place. But, system restore will return your programs and settings back to the way they were prior to this mess. Try to pay closer attention to what you are clicking on next time.

it turns out that is what i did i had choosen the option to do so in the instaltion process.i though tha ti was only gong to get the program by itself but that was no tthe case. instead i got the program and what seemed like eveything on the website. i now realize that when getting this particular program it also comes with alot and i mean alot of extras which i ended up putting all on the desktop.

well i dont need to go that far just yet but that might be an option in the future. i dont remember the steps but i will try that is nothing else works i do not have a program to do this so if there is one that comes with the pc that would be good.

yeah i would really appreatciate an undo button but what i was intrested in is maybe a program that would scan for only the most important files, ones that would keep the computer running then gather everything else and opt for deletion or some type of removal. when ever i d/l something i realize that it comes with extras, i dont always find where the extras are stored so i can delete them myself. i know that certain files that are required by the computer are file differently based on their importance, so is there a program that would identify them all.
Ofcourse, there are certain critical files for your system to operate. But, what is important to you, is not important to someone else. There is no program out there that is going to scan your hard drive and give you the ability to remove "unimportant" files like you are suggesting, because again, what one person feels is important another might not care about. With the exception of clearing temp files, and such, you are not going to find something like that.
System restore is built into your operating system. Its a natural part of your operating system that protects you from damaging changes. You should be able to click your start button and type in 'system restore' in the search box. Your system should have a restore point for pretty much every day of the week as well as for program installations, updates, etc. Just choose a time a day or two prior to installing the software.
But, even then, it may not delete files off your desktop. You're just going to have to go in, identify the files, and delete them AFTER uninstalling the program from "programs and features."
If you want to be able to see what is on your desktop more clearly, you can navigate to the actual desktop folder by opening your C: drive and navigating to the Users\\desktop folder. This folder contains the contents of what you see on your desktop. Then you can sort by date modified, or by type, etc. and easily sort out the files that need to get removed.
i get that some files look the same to a computer and most scanners so they wouldnt be able to tell the importance. but is there a way i could fimnd only the important ones at least to me me a starting line. something that would at least tell me what i have that my pc is using the most.
also when you delete something instead of removing it, what heppens then. it does not give me the same confident feeling that i have properly removed the files or folders. i understand that you may want to just delete evrything that you dont see in the change/remove program list but when i delete them that way i dont know if i am deleting which file and whatever goes along with it. you maybe delete a folder but then that folder cam with files that were not stored in that foldr s oyou end up with a bunch of files with strange names and you dont know if it is needed so you can delete it.
simple rule of thumb, if you don't know what something is then don't delete it.
anything in your own personal folders such as your downloads folder or documents folder can safely be deleted without harming your operating system.
if you want to remove a program you've installed then use the add/remove utility or it's own uninstall utility, for anything else then i'd suggest you leave them alone.
and a big NO!! you can NOT!! remove/delete everything on your pc that doesn't appear in the add/remove programs list. by doing that i can guarantee you'll break your operating system and need to do a reinstall.
