hello. i attempted to download a java update for windows 7, both 32-bit and 64-bit, after uninstalling the old version. my computer showed the download happening…but nothing happened. no download.
Was you trying to do an automatic update? Have you got any error messages or any screen shots?

To download and install Java manually.

  • Click here to visit the official Java site
  • Then navigate to 'Download and Install' and click the hyperlink.
  • Save the file to a known location on your computer, for example, to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the saved file to start the installation process.
  • The installation process starts. Click the Install button to accept the license terms and to continue with the installation.
  • Oracle has partnered with companies that offer various products. The installer may present you with option to install these programs when you install Java. After ensuring that the desired programs are selected, click the Next button to continue the installation.
  • A few brief dialogs confirm the last steps of the installation process; click Close on the last dialog.
  • This will complete Java installation process.

Once you have followed the above steps you may need to restart your browser for the installation to take effect.

Let me know how you get on.
It is a good idea to delete the old version of Java first before installing the new stand-alone version.

You can download the latest version as described above by chrisking73, but it is best practice to download to desktop only first, rather than download and run. Then go to "add and remove programs" and uninstall your old copy pf Java, reboot and then double click on your fresh Java download to install.

From official Java site:

Should I remove older versions of Java?
We highly recommend users remove all older versions of Java from your system.
Keeping old and unsupported versions of Java on your system presents a serious security risk.
Removing older versions of Java from your system ensures that Java applications will run with the most up-to-date security and performance improvements on your system.

Lee

Thanks for clearing that up Lee. Taught me something new as well.
You could also let JavaRa do everything for you as it will uninstall all previous versions and then download only the newest and install it.

Please download JavaRa from the link in my signature below to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • * Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
    * Accept any prompts.
    * Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
    * Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button.
  • Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.
