Using IE v8 and win xp. I have gone in to googles options and turned off ...'Use Google Instant — predictions and results appear while typing' and checked ...'Do not use Google Instant' But it keeps appearing, anyone know how to get rid of this irritating text when searching on google. thanks

Those preferences are stored using cookies. If you've got some kind of corruption in your browser, have cookies blocked, or are just anal about clearing temporary files - you are going to erase those preferences. :)
