Sorry - very new to this. So terminology that I'm using may be incorrect.

Browser : IE 7

I have google in the toolbar (?) .

When I type in words to search, sometimes it opens a different ad hoc page.

When I click on 'Google' in the bar instead of google.com.au (i'm in Australia) - it adds to the end "webhp?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8"

Other times I'll do a search and type in other words to search on but it keeps the original text that I typed in.

It also adds at the end of the searches in the address "tabs=uk" - not sure if this is a problem - must admit I've never really paid attention before.

I downloaded Spyware Detector and ran a scan & fix. It removed a few trojans & fake spyware removers.

Hi fisher_dr,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi Tomk. Thanks in advance for your time is assisting me with this.

I haven't really used my computer for anything other than the internet the last few weeks. But it did hang a few days ago just after switching it on. Clicking on any of my desktop icons didn't do anything.

I've noticed quite a few things with IE though. I have google in the toolbar (not sure if I'm describing it correctly) and when I click on google I get an error message 'The page - www.google.com/rns/b-search/c-/?start=0&country=au - does not exist. ' The URL is 'http://www.google.com.au/webhp?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8'

When I type a term to search in the box in the google search of the toolbar instead of bringing up a list of results - it redirects me to a different site. For example, I just typed in 'hilton hotel sydney' and it redirected me to http://www.hotelminutes.com/sydney-hotels.

When I type in google.com.au in the URL - it brings up the correct page. I type in hilton hotel sydney in the search box which brings up a list of results. The first result returned has URL 'http://www.hiltonsydney.com.au/' but when I click on that I get the pop up blocked message so I temporarily allow. It then opens a new page 'http://www.asiarooms.com/australia/sydney/hilton_sydney.html'

When I click on another result in the list URL - 'http://www.hotel.com.au/sydney/Sheraton-On-The-Park-Hotel-Sydney-1-hotels.asp' it brings up instead 'http://www.aussiecomparison.com/8/franchise-opportunity.html'.

Sometimes when I type in a URL instead of bringing up the correct page it redirects multiple times to a totally different page. I can't get it to do that now though to give you an example.

I'll now follow your steps with the ATF cleaner and Malwarebytes.
I ran ATF Cleaner and cleaned up 718 Mbs. When I click on the 2nd link it takes me to 'http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button' I click on the button to Download now 2nd page displays with message about if download doesn't start then click here. But then it brings up page with URL 'http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/program/mbam-setup.exe' but on the page it has a message Page not found - use Search @ hand to find. I put my cursor in the URL box and hit enter and now it brings up page with Audio101.com Is there another way to download this? Thanks

Clicked on the google link (in toolbar) and the google page loaded. Typed in 'hilton hotel sydney' - the real results displayed. When I click on a result - the real results appear without it being redirected. Looking better but I shouldn't get too carried away. Waiting on your next instructions Tomk. Thanks!
fisher_dr,

Let's dig just a little deeper.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Sorry but I can't see the image that you inserted in reference to the message I should see.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

fisher_dr,

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\1147647C.EXE

    Folder::

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{97ce9ba2-d855-11db-83ca-0015f287e7e6}]

    Driver::
    F106AB54
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Then

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next reply please provide:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • Kaspersky report
  • New HijackThis log taken after everything else completed
Tomk,

Below are the logs required. The Kaspersky scan took over two hours - is this a problem? Computer is starting up a lot quicker now. Had one redirect when on IE today - first in a while…

Let me know what to do next. Thanks.

fisher_dr,

Kaspersky scan took over two hours - is this a problem?

Nope. That's normal.

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):
    • R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&a…&pf=desktop
      R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&a…&pf=desktop

  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Next

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::
    D:\auto.exe

    Folder::

    Registry::

    Driver::

Let's also do a quick rootkit check.

Download Rooter.exe to your desktop

  • Then doubleclick it to start the tool
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt. Post that here

And please give me a new HijackThis log.
