Windows XP Media Center shuts down very slowly and won't suspend or hibernate.
It otherwise behaves like a champ.
This is a little annoying when I need to boot a Linux partition for work. I've taken to shutting down via the task manager and walking away rather than babysitting it.
It would also be nice to be able to get it to suspend/hibernate.
Any suggestions?

Click Start, Run, and paste the following into the Run box;
%windir%\system32\shutdown.exe -s -t 0
Does it do the same thing?
If it does the same thing, try installing
Microsoft's User Profile Hive Cleanup . That often resovles shutdown problems.

This machine is normally pretty zippy - 1.77 GHz, 3.5 GB of RAM. But if I go to the Start menu and choose "Turn Off Computer," it takes about 3 or 4 minutes for the splash to appear where I can choose "Sleep," "Restart" or Shutdown."
If I choose "Sleep" or "Hibernate," the machine will give me the "Saving Your Settings" screen literally forever. If I choose "Restart" or "Shutdown," I get that screen for another 3 or 4 minutes before the machine actually turns off or reboots.
Entering the command you shared in the Run box skipped the waiting for the options splash, but it still took 3 or 4 minutes for the thing to shut down.

I downloaded and installed the UPHC from Microsoft. I gather from the README that once rebooted, the UPHC will run in the background. After rebooting several times, it doesn't seem to have made any difference.
What is listed in your Start, All Programs, Startup ?
Along with what Dan asked for, let's get a list of what is starting at boot time.During installation, uncheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar.

My word but you have a ton of stuff installed and a lot of unnecessary stuff starting at boot time.
Do you actually use Clamwin Antivirus? I see you have Norton installed as well, is it also running? My recommendation would be to uninstall both of them and install
Microsoft Security Essentials .
How does it behave if you boot to Safe Mode with Networking? If better then something is starting at boot that is causing the problem.
Use msconfig to determine what is causing the problem
These are good tutorials on using msconfig in XP, Vista or Windows 7:

Click on
Start then
Run , type
msconfig and press
Enter .
Click on the
Startup tab, record what is currently starting then click the
Disable All button.
Reboot and see if it runs better and shuts down better.
If yes then use msconfig to enable several items at a time till you find the culprit.
If no, start msconfig and click on the
Services tab.
Check the
Hide All Microsoft Services box, record what is currently starting then click the
Disable All button.
Again, do a regular boot, see if it runs normal.
If yes then use msconfig to enable services till you find the culprit.
Once you've found the culprit, uninstall it or find out how to eliminate it from your system. Simply disabling it in msconfig is a temporary fix at best.
Enable everything else you disabled, or leave them disabled and only enable the ones you need, like Anti-virus and/or Firewall.
