Windows XP boots slower and slower. Windows are slow to appear and refresh. HDD light is on more than it is off. Fan speed moves from slow up through 4-5 speeds and stays on high then backs down to slow without keystrokes. Sometimes it stays on high until I power down and then power up. Painfully slow performance.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Vista and Windows 7 users:
1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Good morning, Boot still exceeds 3 minutes, HDD access light is still excessive but DOES stop after a few minutes of the computer being turned on. I have not had the pc on long but at least the fan has not kicked in. (It is possible that there is excessive dust in the unit and it is just getting hot and that is why the fan is ramping up, but I won't open the box until we are done here. I need to see what all programs / startup items you have running.

Download HijackThis .
  • Save HijackThis.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HijackThis.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
System fan is not running like it used to and I like that. Boot up is still 3 minutes with lots of HDD hits. The hits on the HDD stop in about 3-4 minutes, IE7 and mail are slow to open. Here are the HiJackThis logs.

No change since providing you logs yesterday. Standing by for new instructions and wish to say thank you for the service you provide. My PC is always "happier" after a good scrubbing here at what the tech forums.
My suggestion would be to uninstall Norton Security Suite.

If you choose to do the above, get a free one.

Only run one AVG at a time.

Use an AntiVirus Software - Choose only one - More than one will conflict. It is very important that your computer has anti-virus software running to protect against viruses. Update Antivirus prior to manual scans as necessary or as used. Please only choose one, having more than one can cause problems, such as crashes and your computer to slow down.

OK, I have removed Norton Antivirus and installed Avast. Two reboots later my boot times are faster and my HDD "harrassment" has stopped. I won't be here long enough to test the fan behavior but am pleased with the change at first look. My Microsoft Security Icon is red and reads to the effect that Symantec firewall is disabled. If I removed Norton successfully (there were NO error messages) shouldn't that icon be gone? Should I run any diagnostics and post files to you? Today is Friday and I am leaving town for a few days - please don't disable this thread; I'll return Monday to continue the process towards your "all clear." Thank you for the advice. It is hard to believe that such a known product would be the issue on the HDD hits and fan wanderings. I hope you are right and have followed your recommendations. What are my next steps please? Back to you on Monday. :) JB
Still takes a LONG time to boot up; hdd light is going on and on. I watch processes soak up as much as 200K while this is happingn - like MSMPG..exe (?) The fan still kicks on evry now and then but I am thinking it is related to facebook / farmville. I came home tonight and the PC was on (kids had used ) but all was quiet (HDD and Fan).
Remember though - I have removed Norton and installed Avast instead. Are there any other diagnostics to run or logs to provide before my "all clear"?
