Greetings Bruiser,
I happy to hear that you got your virus problem fixed, now let's see what we can do about those pesky updates.
Have you tried this yet. http://fixitcenter.support.microsoft.com/Portal I have seen some remarkable results. Give it a try and let me know how it works for you.
Support for Windows Vista without any service packs installed ended on April 13, 2010. To continue receiving security updates for Windows, make sure you're running Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 (SP2). For more information, refer to this Microsoft web page: Support is ending for some versions of Windows.
Go here for:
Windows Management Framework Core package (Windows PowerShell 2.0 and WinRM 2.0) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968930
SP2 needs to be installed first I think.
Hope this is of some help.
Cheers,
Lee
PS Edit (added info)
Support for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) ended last week on July 12, 2011
To continue support, make sure you've installed Windows Vista SP2. to be able to install Microsoft updates.
An SP2 seperate download for Vista can be obtained from this page at Microsoft Download Center.
There is also the System Update Readiness Tool from Microsoft. It will scan your system to ensure that it has the nessesary files for the system to update properly, and attempt to repair them if it finds any errors.
The above page will tell you what the program does, and provide you with a download for your particular OS (there is a small guide to help you determine 32bit vs 64bit if you are unsure). It will also tell you where to find the log files the program makes when it finishes so you can see what it fixed. This program can take quite a while to run so set some time aside to run it if you decide to do so.
PowerShell issue on Windows Vista:
1) Go to Programs and Features
2) Click on View Installed Updates
3) Look for either of the following KB numbers which indicate earlier versions of PowerShell and uninstall.
KB928439 – Windows PowerShell 1.0 RTM
KB923569 – Windows PowerShell 1.0 RC2
This time the 'Fix It' tool worked and said it had solved all issues. However, I then tried to install updates but they failed once again. SP2 also failed to install, so I'm still running on SP1 at the moment.
Are you still running both McAfee and Kaspersky? If so, un-install one or the other. They are resource hogs and will fight for your system's resources.
Before installing SP2, disconnect from the Internet, and disable your Anti-virus. Make sure you have no other programs running while installing! Let us know if this works.
Bruiser, follow Jacee's advice but then make sure you install SP2 before trying to do any more updates. Without SP2, updates will fail as already experienced as SP1 (only) is no longer supported.
Cheers,
Lee
