Hi,

Have got a Laptop with the Vista O/S running.

I installed some Accounting Software which did not work and after that my Windows update and Defender stopped updating.

I uninstalled it, but the problem remained.

I originally went to the Malware/HJT Forum:

http://forums.whatthetech.com/Windows_Upda…391#entry517391

And was helped by TomK to atleast get it updating in the background but he advised me to come here as you fine people may be able to help me further ;)

Please see my HJT log below.

Anything else, please let me know.

Thanks,

Lotus

Hello Lion. Please answer the following questions so that I can research my findings accordingly. ^_^
  • Can you tell what is the exact problem you face when you try to update your computer?
  • Does the problem occur when downloading or installing updates?
  • Do you receive an error message or error code? If yes, then please state the exact error message / code.
  • Do the updates actually install after the error message?
  • What Operating System is installed on the affected computer?
Anticipate your response eagerly.

Hi Mohit,

Apologies for the delay.

Thanks for taking a look.

Can you tell what is the exact problem you face when you try to update your computer?

When i go to perform a windows update(Start>Windows Update) a Window will appear and then seem to search but not actually report anything back as it is "whitened" out.
I will leave it for anything upto 10 minutes without result. Going Via IE7 makes not difference nor running as Adminstrator.
Task Manager does not seem to take any process and it is attached to Explorer.exe.
I then have to kill it and restart Explorer.

Does the problem occur when downloading or installing updates?

It seems that after speaking to TomK The updates have started but only in the background so to speak. When i explictily go to search the above happens. Installs happen fine also when they are found passively.

Do you receive an error message or error code? If yes, then please state the exact error message / code.

None i am afraid.

Do the updates actually install after the error message?

Updates do install.

What Operating System is installed on the affected computer?

Vista Home Premium.

Thanks,

Lotus Lion
Hello Lion. Since I have no expertise in Windows Vista, I cannot understand what you mean when you say the screen whitens. Perhaps, a screen shot might explain better.

Meanwhile, I hazard a guess that the problem might be with Internet Explorer 7 itself. In that case, see if a RIES (Reset Internet Explorer Settings) resolves the problem or not.

Let us know the results though. Good Luck.

Hi Mohit and Tallin, I think i have attached the error message. Cannot seem to confirm via the Preview Pane i am afraid. I will follow through with the tutorial and RIES and get back as soon as possible. Thanks, Lotus

Yes, it does explain things a lot better, Lion. If the previous solution doesn't work, then please type the following commands one by one in the Command Prompt window and press Enter.

regsvr32 jscript
regsvr32 vbscript
regsvr32 /i mshtml

Restart the computer and see if the problem persists. Hope that helps. :)

Hi Mohit and Tallin,

This windows update issue is a little more involved then i expected.

RIES did not have an effect i am afraid.

I followed through with the tutorial, but and hit a few problems

Method 1
Application is not available, but it does tell me so that is np.

Method 2
I do have an Genuine Version of Vista

Could not Load the following Dlls:

regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

As they could not be found.

The others were, and were successfully Loaded.

Method 3
The Time Date and Language settings are fine.
"Enable SSL 2" and "Enable SSL 3" have been selected.
Unchecked "Check for server certificate revocation".
Deleted Cookies and Temp Files
Cleared "Require server verification"

Method 4
Cannot rename SoftwareDistribution as i do not have the Permissions (Though i thought i was an Administrator)
Cannot Stop Automatic Updates as it does not complete in a timely Manner.

Method 5
Have yet to request a CD with the Updates on it.

Mohit, the dlls were loaded barring:

regsvr32 /i mshtml

which returned the error:

The Module "I mshtml" was laoded but the entry point DLLRegisterServer was not found.
Make sure that "mshtml" is a valid DLL or OCX File and then try again.

I have rebooted a few time and tried to update but still the error persists.
If any information is required, please let me know.

Thanks,

Lotus

Cannot rename SoftwareDistribution as i do not have the Permissions (Though i thought i was an Administrator)

My Tutorial will not work for you if you are not the Administrator.

As I understand it, you need to be the Administrator to run Windows Updates on all machines.

Cannot Stop Automatic Updates as it does not complete in a timely Manner.

Not understaning the above in bold, please clarify?

best regards,
Hi Tallin, Vista is a little strange like that. As far as i was aware, i thought i was an Administrator but apparently not. I have attached the error message that i recieve when i attempt to stop the Windows update in Services.msc Thanks, Lotus

Attachments:

Try this link, googled by me.

I have attached the error message that i recieve when i attempt to stop the Windows update in Services.msc

Now I am understanding you, the word in bold above was not included in your first

Cannot Stop Automatic Updates as it does not complete in a timely Manner.

I do not use Vista, but my tutorial has worked for many that do who have had problems with WU.

Why, if I may ask are you not the Administrator of the system that is having this problem?

kind regards,
Hello Lion. Vista does things a bit differently and so you will need to do this to gain Administrative privileges. If that doesn't work, then try and run CheckSUR and see if it makes any difference or not.

Hope that helps. ^_^

Hi,

It seems that i am actually Missing .net on my Laptop.

Perhaps it was uninstalled during the removal of the Accounting software.

It is not there in Program and Features.

I have been to multiple sites to install it but it never works.
I begins but then stops for all of them and older versions only work on XP SP2.

Please see the attached the error message.

I created a real Vista Administrator Account but even that does not help.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Lotus
Hi lotus,

Were you able to complete the tutorial to the end?

What have you got Automatic Updates set on:

  • Start
  • Control Panel
  • Automatic Updates
For the purpose of this trial and exercise set it to Turn Off Automatic Updates

Please now go to:

  • Start
  • Run
  • Type 'services.msc' without the quote
  • Check Automatic Updates is on Automatic, and started in the left pane
Go to this link, when it loads, click on Custom, then report back what the outcome is please.

Keep us posted again with your results….thanks.

kind regards,
