For the last 2 weeks I have continually been prompted to load Windows Updates (at the sign-off screen). As much as I appreciate this is a very important facility I just feel that there is something wrong. If anyone has any information on this matter it would be much appreciated. Kind regards, Declan,
Declan,

What setting do you have set on your windows update? It sounds like you have it set for either "download but don't install" or maybe "Inform me when there are updates waiting to be downloaded". Go into Control Panel and open Windows Update and check your settings. Let us know that first and in the meantime, don't act on that message you are receiving.

voyagerfan99,

Have you tried running the actual Windows Update? Try that and see what exactly fails (if any).

At the moment that might not be a good idea, as the prompt to "load Windows Updates" being received, might be Malware trying to load. Receiving that message before shutdown (only) seems a bit suspicious, but then again it might just be a simple update. We need to find out the Update settings first.

Cheers,
Lee

Good one Lee, that could be very true, Windows does have settings to allow or remind you to install before shutting down or to shut down without installing. With Malware tricks the way they are today best to be sure first. Better safe than sorry I say.

Well what I meant was actually going to the start menu and running Windows Update manually.

Understandable, one thing I have learned in this forum and others have also, 1 thing can mean something else to a person while it has a different meaning to another. To you it meant what you said, to another they may take it as a yes and click on what they were describing. Throughout my training here I have come to learn to be more clearer on instructions due to the fact of different meaning of words here in the forums. The other factor is many folks my not have the knowledge or skills to understand true computer lingo or proper instructions of doing things that comes easy for me and you.

Take for example the word crazy, to me crazy is nuts, to someone else crazy means insane or to another crazy means cool. So this is why we have to be more precise and a bit more clearer of instructions we give so the meaning does not get misplaced or taken the wrong way, you meant well and were trying to help in which case any help is better than no help and we do welcome all inputs.

Lee's advice was well meant and had to proceed with caution, due to the fact of Malware pretending to be like the real deal, thats how many poor folks get hit with such baddies out their because of clever disguises of notices people receive.

Again thanks for the input and please feel free to help anytime you can, may you have a good day.

I hope no one minds if I interject,

If we can verify that this isn't Malware (best place to go is our Malware forum for that), I have a feeling this is to do with the updates released on 26/4/2011 . We've had a couple of people, including myself, experiencing installation problems. Usually a reboot solves the issue and lets you apply the updates.

But, it is a possibility that you've got stuck in a bit of a loop. The topic below seems to hold the answer:

You need to install each update one at a time. Downloading each update manually may also help, but that particular fix seems to be a bit hit and miss.

But, like I said, you'll need to follow Lee's advice and caution regarding Malware. He seems to have a knack at sniffing that stuff out… :P

Cheers,
