I have several viruses on my computer one of them is a bloodhound and another is a trojan. I am on a seperate PC now so I will post the file names when I get back home. Norton will not get rid of them but it recognizes them tries to repair and fails then gives up. My next problem is, about a month ago a windows update was available so I clicked on the update screen and told it to download the updates and everything. It somehow messed up in the middle of the download and cancelled. Now in the lower right hand corner at all times even after multiple shutdowns and restarts there is the windows update icon. If I click it nothing happens and if I just let the mouse sit overtop of it a lil box pops up that says, "0% Downloaded". Can anyone help me out with any of these problems?? It would be greatly appreciated and like I said I will be posting more when I get home to let you know what the virus names are. Thanks.
Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Download HijackThis into this folder.

If required a tutorial is here = Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

Links to Hijack This! v 1.98.2:

http://tools.radiosplace.com/HijackThis.exe
http://spywarewarrior.com/files/HijackThis.exe
http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/HijackThis.exe

Run it from that folder.

Click "Scan".

DO NOT "FIX" ANYTHING WITH IT YET!!!
FIXING THE WRONG THING COULD RENDER YOUR SYSTEM INOPERABLE!!!

Click "Save log".

Reply to this thread, and "copy/paste" the ENTIRE CONTENTS of the log file into this thread.

Is anyone going to help me and tell me what all this means?? I am sorry for bugging but virus thing keeps popping up and I cannot get rid of it so I am getting pretty annoyed with it. Sorry again for bugging
hello soccerplr012
You have one of the more difficult to fix CWS variants. Please do the following

Step#1

1. Download Service Filter
2. Extract it to it's own folder.
3. Click on ServiceFilter.vbs
4. A text file called POST_THIS will be in the same folder
5. Please use Edit>Select all then Edit>Copy to obtain the contents
6. Please Post the contents into this thread using 'Add Reply'

Step#2

1. Please download DllCompare
( The Screenshot will show you how the program will look when it starts.)

2. Start the Program with its default settings and put a check mark in the include subdirectories. Click the Run Locate.com and wait until the scan says complete.

3. Click the Compare button to start the next process.

4. Files in the upper portion have been verified to "exist", Files in the bottom section were not able to be accessed. Very few files should be listed in the bottom section when the Compare scan is complete.

5. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower section to select them. Right-click on the file and use the Option Rescan screenshot.

6. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then it will be removed from the list (to reduce the number of identified files) screenshot

7. Click the Make a Log of what was found button, and post the log here in this thread using Add Reply to receive further instructions.

Once you have posted those two logs you will receive further instructions

Good Luck!
Ok now im just having all kinds of problems. I downloaded the first file and everytime i try and open it to run it it says "you must unzip in order to run" or somethign and i have unzipped this several times. Now on the second one i run it and it comes up, C:\DOCUM~1\SOCCER~1\Desktop\locate.com C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG.NT. This system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows Applications. Choose 'Close' TO terminate the application. What does all this mean?!?!
Sorry i got the service filter to work. Here is my post this: The script did not recognize the services listed below. This does not mean they are a problem. Please post everything below the row of # signs and nothing from above it. Hello soccerplr012

We will have to do with what programs you have. You can try to extract all files in the HijackThis program to a folder of it's own it may help to get the updated version. Find the compressed file named HijackThis and right-click on it and select Extract All from the menu that pops up. It should start the process to install the new version of HijackThis (1.98.2). If you are successful with this, then delete the old version (1.97.7).

Instead of the DllCompare program, you will need to run the file I have attached here at the bottom of this post called AppInit Bat Attached. A notepad file will be created on your desktop called Windows.txt. Please open that file and choose CTRL-A to select all, CTRL-C to copy the entire contents of the file (it will look like gibberish) and then using Add Reply in this thread use CTRL-V to paste the contents of that file here in this thread.

I would also like you to download the following files for use later:

1. Please Download the most recent version of CWShredder, from CWSInstall.exe

2. Downloaded and Install Spybot S&D, accepting the Default Settings

3. Download and Install Ad-Aware SE. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan
Please see the link at the bottom of this post How To Setup Spybot SD and Ad-Aware SE

4. Please download this tool called About:Buster from: About Buster
Is it the new version Ad-Aware SE Professional or is it Ad-Aware 6.181 Professional or lower? If it is the second one, there are no recent updates for it, and it does will not work for the newer adware/spyware. If you have Ad-Aware 6.181 or lower, then you would be better off downloading the new AdAware SE free version with it's updated reference list. I would also like you to run the programs/tools I mentioned as they target different 'bugs' than Ad-Aware does - they work well as a 'team ' when trying to get rid of Adware/Spyware.

I am sorry about the file being the text file only. However, now you have the instructions and I will attach the correct file to this one. This should tell us if the infection has a hidden dll file that will keep installing the infection if we don't expose and delete it. I also still see evidence of a virus on your computer.

Step#1

Please download AppInit.Bat to your desktop and then double click on it. It should make a file in Notepad named Windows.txt on your desktop. Please open the Windows Txt file, select all, copy and paste it back here in this thread using Add Reply.

Following these steps will produce a file in notepad that appears to contain gibberish. Please post the entire contents of the Notepad Window back here.

1. Please Copy the contents of the quote box to Notepad.

Reg save "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows" windows1.hiv
ren windows1.hiv windows.txt

2. Save the notepad file as *All Files* with the name the file Appinit.bat
on the Desktop.

3. Double-click on Appinit.bat

4. This will create a file on the desktop named windows.txt

5. Please post the entire contents of Windows.txt to this thread using 'Add Reply'.
I dont knwo if im messing up or not but thats the text file again. i click on it and it gives me the instructions. I downloaded that service pack 2 for XP last night and now my comp periodically reboots on its own.
XP2 does have some quirks in it but have not heard about that one so think it is part of the infection.

Instead of downloading the file can you follow the instructions here and see if it works:

Step#1

1. Please Copy the contents of the quote box to Notepad.

Reg save "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows" windows1.hiv

2. Save the notepad file as *All Files* instead of *Text Documents with the name the file Appinit.bat
on the Desktop.

3. Double-click on Appinit.bat

4. This should create a file on the desktop named windows.txt

5. Please post the entire contents of Windows.txt to this thread using 'Add Reply'.
