I want to know if i can put a bigger power supply in my Dell Inspiron 530 so i can upgrade my onboard graphics card which is giving me problems and errors im running win vista…4gb ram…500gb hard drive… and Dell calls this the mini tower looks mid sized to me…i was told i couldn't put a bigger power supply in it because it would fry the mother board then was told it wouldnt so any help would be appreciated and suggestions as to what to put in here for better performance … :pullhair:
please don't write in such bold coloured letters, gives me a headache reading it. :D yes you can add a more powerful power supply(psu) to any pc, the pc just draws what power it needs from it, eg. install a 850watt psu and the pc draws 350watts from it because that's all it needs to operate. now whether it will actual fit or not is another thing, it depends on case but most usually will fit a standard size unit, also if you have an older motherboard with a 20pin connection you may find you'll need to buy an adapter to use a modern 24pin power supply connector on it too.(not expensive) power supplies do not increase performance in any way whatsoever. first thing you need to do is find out what your psu is rated at e.g.450watts then find out what your newer graphics card will draw, and to be on the safe side add them both together then find a psu that is rated more than the total you have.
In addition to terry1966's comments, I'd like to say that any ATX PSU will fit your Dell Dimension 530. When installing it, make sure you connect both the 24-pin Motherboard Connector and the 4 Pin Molex Connector. The system will not power up without plugging in both. I'd also like to add that when you pick your GPU, you need to find out if it needs any additional power sources. High end cards will require two 6-pin PCI connectors to power it properly. Not all PSU's have these connector as standard, so do your research and pick carefully. P.S. What kind of errors and problems are you experiencing in Vista?
