hi there,

I just posted this in the software - windows forum and got recommended to post it here instead.

(here's the link to the other thread: http://forums.whatthetech.com/index.php?sh…p;#entry715830)

and this is the description of the symptoms:

since turning on my laptop this morning, windows vista seems to have gone a bit wierd

it's started responding slowly, i.e. when i minimise a window or open a new one, theres a pause of a few seconds before it actually reacts.

the strangest part is, i've got vista installed but it's started looking like an older version of windows - i.e. the semi-transparent parts around the windows that vista has are now just solid grey bars, the start bar is just a solid grey bar rather than the semi-transparent blue one, do you know what i mean?

it also just told me that it didn't recognise my USB memory stick (something it's never done in the past 4 - 5 years I've had it) even though i'd already opened up my essay and had edited it and saved it to the computer.

the only thing I can think of is that last night i plugged in my girlfriend's new external hard drive to copy some of her photos to it, so it had to install the driver software - could something have malfunctioned in this process?

p.s. - just read the guidelines for asking for help - I'm using a dell inspiron 6400, with windows vista. the problem started when I turned on the laptop, so no applications were running. I think everything else was covered already smile.gif

I was recommended to come here by Jimbo1, as he wanted to make sure I hadn't got a virus or anything off the (brand new and unopened) external hard drive.

what I forgot to mention in the above thread was that the first thing I did when I noticed the problem was run a spybot S&D scan, which found an adware called "doubleclick" and removed it - but the problem is still the same, and I've also had that one and removed it before, without these symptoms.

I've just done an ERUNT system registry backup

please help, and thanks a lot!

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Vista and Windows 7 users:
1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Click Apply, and then click OK.

ok, i did all of that. Malwarebyte's anti-malware said it didn't find anything malicious - I'll post the log at the end of this message. in terms of the computer's behaviour, i'm not sure if its good or bad. When I turned it on this morning, the appearance of vista had gone back to normal. Strangely, I had tried turning it off and on again yesterday, and nothing happenned - it continued looking wierd. but today, it looks normal. It was still running really sluggish for most of today, and i've noticed a few strange things that look like the screen has flashed on and off for a fraction of a second, last night and earlier today. here's the log Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.50.1.1100 www.malwarebytes.org Database version: 5931 Windows 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2 Internet Explorer 7.0.6002.18005 02/03/2011 15:02:07 mbam-log-2011-03-02 (15-02-07).txt Scan type: Quick scan Objects scanned: 171946 Time elapsed: 14 minute(s), 59 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 0 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 0 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Infected: (No malicious items detected) Folders Infected: (No malicious items detected) Files Infected: (No malicious items detected)
It doesn't appear to be an infection.
My thoughts are a driver from the external device.

i plugged in my girlfriend's new external hard drive
