Recently windows XP SP2 has stopped generating thumbnails for my video files. I havn't changed any settings that Im aware of and have done some extensive research online to try and solve this issue. Here is what I've attempted so far: Deleting the Iconcache.db file Re-installing the video drivers Re-installing Windows media player (11) TweakUI's repair too TweakUI in safemode Deleting Iconcache.db in safe mode. Its very frustrating but I cannot seem to find a fix that actually works! Any help would be appreciated.
Hi, sorry to hear of the problems with the thumbnails.. have you tried re registering SHMEDIA.DLL ? 1 Click on Start 2 Click on Run 3 in the white box that opens type REGSVR32 SHMEDIA.DLL (note the single space in the above, (between the "2" and the "S" it needs to be there) 4 Click on Ok Let us know if this helps Regards paws
Okay I just did that and it still didnt bring any thumbnails :-/ My pictures will still create their own thumbs just not videos
Hi Ok, try re registering this one regsvr32 shimgvw.dll let us know how you go Regards paws 1 Click on Start 2 Click on Run 3 in the white box that opens type regsvr32 shimgvw.dll (note the single space in the above, (between the "2" and the "S" it needs to be there) 4 Click on Ok
Still no luck :( Also, the old thumbnails that once existed for all of my training videos and whatntot before windows stopped assigning them are still there and function properly its just anything new
Hi, Ok, looks as though it could be a file association issue, have you made any amendments to them recently? if so undo them… The next step would be to try a System Restore Point made a week or two before the problems started. 1 Start 2 All Programs 3 Accessories 4 System Tools 5 System Restore and enter a suitable date to set your computer back to. This procedure is generally safe, is part of the Windows operating System and is tried and tested technology….it should not affect any of your correctly filed data files, but as always before making any system changes take a moment to ensure that your back up is 100% up to date, accurate, reproducible and kept safe on removable media. Let us know how you get on Regards paws
Ive considered file associations last night so Ive reset everything for Windows Media Player, where I like them, but its still not generating a thumnail. Usually after a video is downloading, or uploaded, it takes the first scene or whatever of the video and thats the thumbnail. If the first scene is black then the thumb is black. Instead now everything has the WMP icon
Hi OK, how did the machine respond to you setting it back in time (using a System Restore Point) to a week or so before the trouble started? Regards paws
