System Crashing...maybe Video Card?
2 min read
Hello to all at what the tech, i used to visit when it was Tom Coyote, and they did a fantastic job helping out.
I am writing because I'd like to "tune-up" my computer again. I have Windows XP, service pack 3, Intel Celeron, 2.6 GHz, 2 GB RAM.
Recently it has been crashing when trying to view certain video formats, mp4 in particular, or trying to use the "view full screen" feature.

You apparently had AVG version 9, but removed it in favor of Windows Security Essentials?
Internet access via Teleca AB (Sweden)
You have Google Toolbar installed on Internet Explorer
And you use Google FastSearch
And you have Nero Ahead installed (can't yet tell if it is running active, but probably worthless if it is)
Ask Toolbar has probably been removed ?
You may have utorrent installed
You may have Southwest Airlines utility installed
Your Adobe Reader is reasonably up to date
You still have Windows Live OneCare scanner installed <– Has been discontinued and may cause some conflicts.
You have Media Player Codec Pack 3.7.0
Event log events
coolpro2.exe
IE
Winword
Your time and time zone may not be correct,
You've had difficulty updating JAVA JRE
"System Administrator has set policies to prevent this installation."
You may have previously been running a corrupt version of Adobe CS2
Your JAVA JRE is [removed] (not to terribly out of date, but needs to update to - 18 – Ooops. Maybe you have JRE [removed]
MemTurbo may be active but is more than likely consuming more than it might conserve for your machine

Questions:
Do you have the installation CD for Windows XP Home?
You state that you've attempted to adjust your paging file / virtual memory because of warning messages that you are running low on virtual memory
To what values have you set paging file?
What Drive is your paging file located on?
Do you have at least 200mb paging file on C:\ ?
Do you still have that same problem if you set paging file to "Allow windows to manage…" ?
When you have problems "crashing" with video viewing at full screen, do you have other windows open running in background? How many?
Have you done any specialized work in your Services? For instance, turning off various Services that you believed your system did not need?
Are there any yellow or red warnings in your Device Manager indicating problems with device drivers?
Any "Unknown Device" items in Device Manager?

Recommendations:
Please download and run Lavalys - Everest 2.20 and post a Quick Report of Sensors
http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
This will give us Temperature and Voltage readings
If you are able, please run PCPitstop OverDrive Full Tests
Here's how:
You must use your Internet Explorer for this procedure. (doesn't work so well in Firefox or others)
Go to: http://www.pcpitstop.com
Click on "Free Computer Check-up" listed below PC Pitstop OverDrive
In the User Login - Click on "Sign up FREE!"
You'll need to submit a valid email address and create your own password, then click - Create Account(button)
Now enter your email address and password to Log in, Select - Scan this system Now!(button)
You will then be asked to download an ActiveX component and allow it to install.
It is safe and does not compromise your privacy.
Follow the on-screen prompts to install the ActiveX and to allow the Full Tests to be run on your machine.
The Full Tests take about 2 1/2 - 3 minutes on most machines.
When complete, a Results - Summary - Recommended Fixes will be displayed.
Please post the URL internet address from your Results, back here into this Topic Thread so that we can review the configuration and present performance levels of your machine.
Note: During the graphics 2D and graphics 3D testing, your screen will display some rapidly moving objects.
If you are sensitive to visual flashing, it may cause dizziness. Therefore, look away from the screen during that portion of the testing.
After reviewing the results we will be more informed and may be able to provide better recommendations for you to work towards improving your machine's performance.

Next Steps (after replying to the above)
We can run CodeStuff Starters to disable any unnecessary programs and process from running at Startup.
We can run SFC /scannow Windows File Protection to assure that all of your Windows XP files are present and not corrupted.
We can run CHKDSK to assure that your C:\ partition has no file or disk errors
We can run Windows Memory Checker to assure that your RAM is functioning correctly

In your next Reply:
1. Please review and answer the above Questions
2. Please post PCPitstop OverDrive Full Tests - link to Results
3. Please post Everest 2.20 - Quick Report - Sensors (post as Plain Text)
4. Be sure to let us know if you have XP Home installation CD
Give us an overview of how your machine is currently running.
I realize the above is a long list (don't bother with the "Next Steps" at this time)
Perhaps with the additional information from the above, we'll be able to give you some more informed recommendations.
Best Regards
