[Resolved] Help needed! All kinds symptoms on XP laptop (HJT log

How's it running now?

Still getting wierd redirects and still stuck on "preparing to stand by" screen. It shuts down just fine, but won't stand by. In the meantime, I've copied her "my documents" stuff (mainly music, pictures, documents and videos) to an external hard drive. Would it be safe to do a complete reinstall of Windows and then drag her old files over, or is it possible that one/some of those files are infected and would just infect the new installation?

I would have reformated long ago if were me. If you can save her important data and pictures, I'd reformat. Some of these RootKits can't be removed without a reformat.

That's kind of embarassing.
Here I was thinking: "I kinda wanna try reformatting and starting from scratch, but I'd hate for LDTate to think that I wasted so much of his time and then quit on him before he could see me through."
And the whole time, you're thinking: "Why doesn't this guy just reformat while he can still at least access his files"


So I think I'll go head and try to reformat and start over. You can go ahead and close this thread, and if I need more help or have issues with the reinstall, I'll start a new thread in the appropriate forum.

Not everyone is capable of backing up their important data / files. Not everyone will keep a good backup / image of their stuff either. I hate to give up on killing a bad guy so I'll try anything to kill it If you wanted to continue, we can keep trying
