Dear People,
I hope you can help - I have a relatively old Compaq Presario 700. It has been generally very reliable and not given much trouble in all the time I've had it. However, lately there's been some strange stuff going on. It often takes ages to get started or to open pages/programs. There's often a 'leftover' image of the previous page left behind for a time. I've been having lots of non-responding programs and for the last few days trouble connecting to the internet. I can sometimes get through, but the page (Yahoo) fails to open completely; sometimes I get through and the page just disappears and other times I get the following message:
dwwin.exe Application Error The application failed to initialize properly (0X000012d)….

Any ideas what's going on?

Step # 1

Please download and run CWShredder. Make sure that all browser windows are closed with the exception of Cwshredder and choose FIX.

Please download and run Spybot 1.4 & AdAware SE Then follow the instructions in the link below to run.

Then do a virus scan here >>> Trend Micro

Step # 4

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

I've followed your instructions (although near the end of the Trend Micro scan the scan stopped leaving no results).

First Ewido found 77 items, but I can't find the scan it saved. The second Ewido found and fixed 14 items; copied below.

Is there anything else that needs to be done? And, is there anything that can be done about the leftover/echo effect (where images/text from the page being closed are superimposed on the current page)?

Scan with hijackthis and put a check beside these lines and choose FIX

Reboot

Lets do some cleaning.

Download ccleaner from the link below, save it to your desktop. Open ccleaner and click on run ccleaner at the bottom right.

Next download Regseeker from the link below. Save it to your destop. Open Regseeker and click on clean registry, next click ok. Once the scan is complete make sure the make backups is checked and then select all and delete it.

Then reboot and a new hijackthis log please.

Siggyx, I really appreciate the help you've given. I've done everything except the regseeker thing. I've download it (numerous times!) but can't get it to open (it's saved on the desktop first as a zippered file icon and then without the zipper). I've tried using the 'run…' doohickey but the gives an error response saying the program can't be found. Anyway around this? - n

The system seems a bit faster moving between pages and so on, but I'm getting frequent "dsn cannot find server" messages (could just be a coincidence) and during the restart the following message came up (first time I recall seeing such a thing): "Please wait while windows configures trayApp"

Click here to run ActiveScan.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open…click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Paste the contents of the Panda scan report along with a new HijackThis Log in your next reply.

Please download Asquared from the link below.

http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/download/

Safe it to your desktop. Next open and check for updates.

Boot to safe mode (tap f8 while bios loads)

Then scan your system (this will take some time) after the scan is compelte allow it to fix what it has found. If there is something that it can not clean please let me know what it was.

Then reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

Did as you has suggested but forgot to use the safe mode thing - should I go back and re-do?

The a-squared thingiebob found and fixed 3 malware whatevers. I notice that while moving between pages has greatly improved, since the panda scan shut down, start up and loading pages takes a loooooong time. I'm getting a fair number of 'cannot display page' - often when I'm trying to access my email and on start up I get a dialogue box from Windows Installer saying to wait while it configures fax. This would be fine except I don't have a fax - just an HP 3 all in one (scanner, printer, copier). I have no idea if any of this means anything or is just coincidence. Thanks again for all your help.
