the malware/virus removal forum just helped me through a trojan infection.
i followed up by running a defrag.
would you mind looking at this and telling me if you think it looks OK?
i'm also wondering if someone could walk me through what is running in the background or running at startup to see if could ease the burden a little on this laptop.
thanks.

to c what 's running just do a ctrl, alt delete and bring up ur task manager…look under "processes" this will tell you what's running
to c what starts up just go to ur run command..type in msconfig and look under ur "start up" tab….
as for ur defrag report…to me that just reorganizes ur files…ie…puts all the .jpg .txt the.docs together for it to bes quicker to get at..it then tells u how much space it freed up in doing so..and ya., it's nomral as far as i know for windows defrag to say there are certain files it cannot defrag…..
hope this helps!

The two fragments (total fragmentation 20%) that are reported are "most likely" System Restore Points and Paging File.
If your machine is running competently at this time, after malware removal, you can clear all but your most recent Restore Point, and also clear your Paging File.
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk CleanUp - C:\ – More Options - System Restore - Cleanup - OK - Yes
While you are there, you can allow Disk CleanUp to also remove
Temporary Internet Files
Downloaded Program Files
Offline Webpages
Temporary Files
Recycle Bin

To clear your Paging File:
Right-Click My Computer - Properties - Advanced(tab) - Performance - Settings(button) - Advanced(tab) - Virtual Memory - Change(button)
Place a Mark in the radio spot in front of No Paging File - Then press - Set - OK - Apply - OK/close
the changes you have made require you to restart your computer before they can take effect. - OK - OK
While you are there, you may wish to select - Performance - Settings - Adjust for best performance
Doing so will make some of your icons and windows function panels appear less colorful, but will not affect the function of browsing or viewing videos, or the appearance of any installed application program.
Ok - OK
You must now restart your computer in order for the changes to be put into effect. - Yes
_______________
Allow reboot
Next:
Right-Click My Computer - Properties - Advanced(tab) - Performance - Settings(button) - Advanced(tab) - Virtual Memory - Change(button)
Place a Mark in the radio spot in front of Custom Size - Enter a number 3x the amount of Phyiscal Ram your machine has installed - Then press - Set - OK - Apply - OK/close
Allow to reboot.
You should be good to go.
If you wish to see what affect on Fragementation Total your above actions have achieved, you can run your Defrag tool again as "Analyze" or go ahead and run a Defrag (best when done in SAFE Mode)
Defragmentation is a routine that you can perform at intervals of about once every 6 months.
More will probably not help the average user much and serves only as unnecessary ware and tear on the Hard Drive.
