I removed Windows Defender using 'add/remove'. I then used 'search' and found it in the recycle bin. I did an advanced search and found it in 'hidden files' and removed it. I think I should not remove anything from 'hidden files' and hope no harm is done. For future reference, is it ok to remove 'search' items after add/remove and should this include 'hidden files' or not?
There is no doubt that after uninstalling programs there are often many pieces left behind in both the registry and the file system. In most cases, any components of the program that would negatively, or otherwise, effect your system will have been removed. There are occasionally times when a program just will fail to uninstall properly and you have to get more forceful. However, if a progam has uninstalled correctly, I am one to stay on the side of caution and would recommend not removing anything further from the system by manual searches, especially in the registry. There is little to no benefit in doing so, and a lot of opportunity to accidentally remove something you really shouldn't have.
I understand your wish to remove all pieces after uninstalling software, because I'm doing the same, including hidden files. If you use Kaspersky and Zone Alarm and decide to remove them, please read topic Remove fidbox.dat (hidden file), and my negative experience (you can skip part with registry). Just to say, you can use useful program CCleaner (freeware) to clean PC, Internet activity and light and safe registry cleaning with backup option (positive experience). arTech
I guess only ime will tell if I have done any harm by removing the items found under 'search' in removing Windows Defender, especially the hidden files. I have discontinued this practise as unnecessary and harmful. I have used ccleaner in the past but had problems. Make sure you can undo the action you perform, if possible. I avoid registry cleaners as I am not capable of maneuvering the registry.
