I'm writing here through another computer to request your help. After downloading a certain file, my computer has started being infected with an unknown virus. It started by creating 3 different shortcuts to porn sites (like Youporn or something), then resuming to infect files here and there such as my Adobe programs, AVG, windows executables and such. Winlogon has been locked down by the OS, I can't access secured websites anymore, and the last time I turned my computer on, explorer.exe wouldn't turn on, which means all I could see was my wallpaper. I can still access my computer through Safe Mode, but none of my protection programs can actually help me in locating the virus.

Programs I have installed:
-AVG 8.0 (free)
-Ad-Aware
-Spybot, Search & destroy

You could try System Restore. 1. Click Start. 2. Point to All Programs. 3. Point to Accessories. 4. Point to System Tools. 5. Click System Restore. 6. Follow the instructions on the wizard. See if you can find a date the the PC worked.
I actually did a system restore as my first reflex. Sadly, the virus was still there, f***ing up my files one by one. I had both Spybot, Hijackthis and AVG running, but to no avail. I had to format my computer in the end. It's not such a bad thing though, it needed the clean-up. I could identify the virus/worm/whatever as "Sofatnet.exe", Trojan Generic 14 and some thing working for "Spysheriff". One came by, it let all the others in like a barn. Stupid carp**. My problem has been "resolved", the attacks have finally gone dead, so um this topic can be flushed. Thanks for the advice anyway, LDTate.
There are some very nasty infections.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would suggest you read How to Prevent Malware:
