I was looking at some game sites last night, dowloaded a file. After installing the file, I was immediatley attacked. There were four programs running in the tool bar at the lower right hand side of the window, that I stopped them in Task manager and deleted the folder and files and registry. And a link to a porn site gets placed on the desktop:

BUT when I re-booted same attack (different file name this time, deleted etc from pc and registry).
The "error" messages that pop up do not give a program attached like McAfee, Windows etc but if selected all go to this site(stopped by McAfee):

Anyway here is a Hijack log.

Any thoughts as to where the file is located that needs to be removed?

Hi, and Welcome to WhatTheTech :)

My name is jpshortstuff. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
You are using an old version of HijackThis so please remove it and download HijackThis version 2.0.2.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.

  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Post that log back here.
Please right click Internet Explorer on your desktop and then select "Run As Administrator". Next, go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

NOTE: Internet Explorer will temporarily have administrator privileges, this is required for the scan but dangerous for normal surfing so do NOT open any other websites in IE until after the scan has finished and this window has been closed.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.

Man I hate Vista. I can't find the Kaspercy file. It is late and I re-run the scan tomorrow.

BTW I have Smithfraudfix on the pc and McAfee keeps telling me the PCViwer is a potentially unwanted program. I should think that they would know about it? Sinnce it is designed to remove harmful programs.
Ok, I'll await the Kaspersky results :)

Can you post the MalwareBytes log as well please?

Well, SmitFraudFix isn't a commercial program, it is made by a member of this malware removal community. As far as McAfee are concerned, they have no idea whether or not it is actually safe. A few of the tools we use are picked up by commercial AntiVirus and AntiMalware scanners because of this.

Thanks.
A little education if you please. I ran a scan again and went to safe it, and the file was right where I saved it, so I saved to another location. After saving I am unablse to search for or find this file. What setting must I have to find a *.txt file that is on the pc? Here is Malaware Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.28 Database version: 1212 Windows 6.0.6001 Service Pack 1 9/27/2008 10:18:17 mbam-log-2008-09-27 (10-18-17).txt Scan type: Full Scan (C:\|) Objects scanned: 192887 Time elapsed: 1 hour(s), 13 minute(s), 41 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 6 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 2 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{fb869eab-37b8-495c-b83c-6774d013abf0} (Trojan.FakeAlert) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. For example I cannot open c:\users\accountname\LocalSettings. I get an error message location is not accessible. Access denied. That is where one of the text files is located(MyDocuments actually, but access is denied there also)
Hi

Perhaps we could try uploading it. Start a new reply to this topic, and then navigate to below the main post area, where you will find the Attachment Manager. Click Browse and then locate the report. Click ok/open and then UPLOAD. All you need to do then is Add Reply (you will probably need to enter some text into the main post area).

If that fails, perhaps you could try running the scan again, and then save the report somewhere that you can definitely get to, like C:\.

If not, we will try something else.

How is the computer running, apart from this?

Thanks.
When I select file to uplaod, it shows the file, but when I select upload, I get an error message you didn't select a file. But the files don't show up on a scan, but when I go to save them as: the files are there and the program asked if I want to write over it. What is up with Vista
This one?

What setting must I have to find a *.txt file that is on the pc?

No special setting, you should be able to see it unless it was specifically made hidden.
Yes, it is the same pc. I have shut the web site down, had it open for a couple of days to type in the results. There were maybe 3 files that might be effected. I can't remember all the specific information. But with Vista, I am unable to find/ copy the files that I have copied. When doing the file save as the files were present and asked if I wanted to overwrite. So the files are there, I am just unable to copy them to a post because I can't "find" them with this gd Vista. I need some technical information/skills with Vista to transfer the information
Okay as far as Vista folder/file structure goes it's a bit different from XP and will take some getting used to….it did for me at first.

If you want to go to "My Documents" (the "XP way") the correct path is…

C:\Users\%user name%\Documents

See the difference?

Now, just to be clear, what are you looking for? The Kaspersky file? The easiest thing to do is save on your desktop, that way you cannot lose it. Do you remember where you saved it?
