Hi, I recently was infected with XP Antivirus 2008. It keeps restarting my computer and it doesn't let me access links on search engines. I have already ran Symantec Antivirus, Malware Bytes, and Spybot S&D. I have also tried to remove it manually through the registry but I can't find any of the files that are supposed to be related to the virus. Right now I am currently running my computer in Safe Mode with networking enabled. Please help. Here is my HijackThis Log.

Hi coastercarl1,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
Please note that on a Vista machine, most of the tools we use must be ran as an administrator (right click and select Run as Administrator)

A. Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE directly to your Desktop.

Note: If you already have ComboFix on your machine, please DELETE it from your desktop before downloading the newest version.

B. Now we must disable some of your security programs so that they do not interfere with the running of our tools:

NORTON ANTIVIRUS
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a [external image: Posted Image] sign.
  • right-click it -> chose "Disable Auto-Protect."
  • select a duration of 5 hours (this assures no interference with the cleanup of your pc)
  • click "Ok."
  • a popup will warn that protection will now be disabled and the sign will now look like this: [external image: Posted Image]
You succesfully disabled the Norton Antivirus Guard.

C.Go to [external image: Posted Image] -> Run -> copy/paste the following single line command in the runbox & click OK

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

[external image: Posted Image]
  • DO NOT USE your computer for any other purpose while ComboFix is running.
  • ComboFix may restart your computer, this is normal.
  • When finished, it will produce a log, ComboFix.txt.
  • Please post ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Tomk, I really appreciate you helping me out with this. I have a few questions. First, I don't have Norton on my computer but I do have Symantec. I tried to disable to but it wouldn't let me. Is it ok to keep it running? Also, the virus won't allow me to access either of those downloads, heck it won't eve allow me to access these forums I'm actually on a friends computer right now. I was wondering if I should download Combofix on my friends computer and then burn it to a disk and upload it on my computer? Again I appreciate your help.
coastercarl1, Yes. You can download ComboFix and transfer. Usually it will fit on a thumbdrive (if you have one). Go ahead and try to run Combofix even though Symantec won't let you shut it off. You've definately got a couple of nasties going on there. MalwareBytes should have cleaned more than it did. This could be a drawn out process unless we're lucky. But we'll keep punching.
Ok I put ComboFix on a disc and put it on my computer. However, when I run it the little loading bar appears briefly and nothing else from the program appears. Instead, an error message pops up that says ComboFix has detected the presence of rootkit activity and needs to reboot. If I hit ok it reboots the computer. Also, I can't run windows at all under normal settings because it just automatically restarts itself. I can run it in safe mode however.
coastercarl1,

Lets try a different tool.

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\). Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key repeatedly;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual user account.
  • Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
  • It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key to restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
  • Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.
  • A text file should automatically open, so please copy the contents and post them here. We also need you to post a new HijackThis log
coastercarl1,

OK. Let's see if we can get something to work.

Please download gmer.zip from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

  • Right click on gmer.zip and select Extract All….
  • Click Next on seeing the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard.
  • Click on the Browse button. Click on Desktop. Then click OK.
  • Click Next. It will start extracting.
  • Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish.
  • Double click on gmer.exe to run it.
  • Select the Rootkit tab.
  • On the right hand side, check all the items to be scanned, but leave Show All box unchecked.
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When the scan is finished, click Copy to save the scan log to the Windows clipboard.
  • Open Notepad or a similar text editor.
  • Paste the clipboard contents into the text editor.
  • Save the Gmer scan log and post it in your next reply.
  • Close Gmer.
  • Open Command Prompt by going to Start > Run and type in cmd. Press Enter.
  • In Command Prompt, type in net stop gmer. Press Enter.
  • Type in exit to close Command Prompt.

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.
Ok I ran the program and I saved the log but I did it in safe mode and I can't get on the internet on my computer. Also it doesn't seem I can burn a disc in safe mode so that i can transfer the log file to another computer. Should I try and restart it with normal settings or what?
coastercarl1,

OK. Lets try a couple of things.

Reboot your computer like you are going into safe mode but, this time select Last Known Good Configuration and see if we can get you into normal mode. If it works, great. If it doesn't, try to get online using safe mode with networking enabled.

Either way we need to disable Spybot Teatimer:

  • Launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
  • On the left hand side, click on Tools, then click on the Resident Icon in the list.
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • Click on the "System Startup" icon in the List
  • Uncheck the "TeaTimer" box and "OK" any prompts.
  • If Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted.
  • Exit Spybot S&D when done.
  • (When we are done, you can re-enable Teatimer using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Resident TeaTimer" and check the "TeaTimer" box in System Startup.]

Then update your Malwarebytes and rerun. Post report and new HijackThis log.

If you can get online, I'd like to see the Gmer report.
Ok I did what you told me to with Spybot and I finally got the Internet to work. I now have the Gmer log, Malware Log, and my HijackThis log. Hopefully they'll help

coastercarl1,

Excellent. Now we're gaining.

But the bad news is:

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

Please run Combofix per instructions in Post #2.
