Internet seems to disconnect or have lag spikes

I've been having this for a while now, and its getting annoying when I am trying to play my online games and it disconnects me and my messengers. While at times it isn't exactly a complete disconnect from the Internet more like a lag spike. I have a DSL modem with a Linksys WRT54G2 Router. I updated the Routers Firmware yesterday to the newest. My computer is a Windows Vista Home premium, it is wired to the modem/router. And we have a Windows XP Home Edition downstairs that connects by a wireless Linksys adapter. I don't recall having these problems before when we first set up the network, But I can't be accurate as I am not exactly sure. All I know is it used to work without this problem before. I tried looking for answers but only one I've seen really is the one about uninstalling vista drivers and putting in XP ones and using WLAN Optimizer or Vista anti lag which I haven't tried yet. My friend suggested I turn on a constant ping and see what my packets do when it happens. I could see the possibility for a lag if you are putting high demand on your connection with online gaming and you also have another computer connected at the same time because the bandwidth isn't as high for dsl as for cable. What you might try is to totally disconnect the other computer from the router and then try your game. If it stops lagging you will know that you don't have enough bandwidth to run a game with another computer using the internet at the same time. You could also try to contact your ISP if you continue to have problems.

Yeah It didn't have that problem when it only had the modem. I don't think the other computer has any connection problem but I can't tell for sure since I do not use it my parents do. And My moms either on websites like myspace, and my Dad youtube most the time when they do use it.

Sorry to double post but, Now that I had updated the Routers Firmware apparently when we connect to it with the wireless computer, The network name is link sys even though I put in a network name. Some reason if it will not change from default. And my parents have been complaining the connection has stopped working sometimes even though it is still connected. And Only way I can fix it is to reset the router. Although my wired computer isn't having a problem at the moment, and it seems the disconnects have kinda stopped happening since this.

Let's eliminate the router and see if the problem exists or not.

Connect the computer you use for gaming directly to the DSL modem then try your game. See if you have any problems. If not then the fault is in the router. Since you've already flashed it there is not much more you can do except replace it.

Well My parents got tired of the router not working right so we got a new router now it is a WRT320N and a new adapter with it. I just set it up today, had trouble with its installation disc so I had to download the installation from the manufacturer site and got past that problem. It seems to be working fine. But I don't know if I will disconnect or not during gaming yet with this new one. There is a firmware update available for it on their site too but I'm not going to try updating Router firmware again after what happened with the last one. I find it new that this new router seems to keep me always connected to the Internet now, and I can no longer disconnect or connect when I want to.
