Windows Media player not letting me install? !*HELP*!

Well i had the old version of windows media player and it wouldn't let me play anything no wmv, mp3s, nothing! Only avi's but the sound didn't work. So i just downloaded VLC player and ignored it. Now though, i want to fix this! so i downloaded Windows 11 and when it gets done installing i get "it was not possible to complete setup for more assitance click web help It was not possible to complete; windows media player 11 was not installed. Restart windows and then rune WMP setup again" I go to webhelp it says "You've encountered error message C00D2AFB while using Windows Media Player. Additional information is not currently available for this error." " Technical Details This error might have been triggered by an error in another program or component of Windows. I found an interesting fix for this error 0x80070005.

Run the tool, and click "Continue." After a brief moment you should see a page displaying the properties of your current Windows installation and it should say on there somewhere Validation Status: Genuine.

Now try to install WMP11.

Hi Please locate the wmp setup.log. C:\windows\wmsetup.log Open it, and look in the most recent lines. Look for lines that states "ERROR" Does any of the error's states: "ERROR:Access Denied" ? Regards

The error's means this;

Result: 0x80070005 : "Access denied" relates to these two specific regkeys if present;
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMPlayer.OCX or HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMPlayer.OCX.7
Result: 0xc00d2afb: Means the specified action cannot be completed before a reboot have taken place. Not a error interesting in itself.
Error: '0x80070002: Usually means that wmp setup cannot find the specified file.


Download the Windows Uninstaller cleanup utility.
Run it, and remove anything related to Wmp11 only
Run your favorite Temp file cleaner or use windows own cleaner.
Reboot.

Close down all your security programs, including 3rd party firewall if any (enable windows own for the time being)
Use CTRL - ALT - DEL(ete) to close the processes if needed, for the security programs. Usually closing them down
by the tray by clock is sufficient.

Try install WMP11 again with a off-line installer: http://www.filehippo.com/download_windows_media_player/

If still a no-go, please check the following location;

C:\windows\updspapi.log

Please post any Error 5, and corresponding regkeys if any.

For some reason when i try to run " Windows Uninstaller cleanup utility." i get this error message:

Please goto start > Run > Type: Regsvr32 vbscript.dll
Enter

This should re-register the VBscripting

Try run the windows uninstaller utility again.

If you still get a error, let it be for the time being.


The error 5's and access denied error's are related to the two regkeys I mentioned earlier.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMPlayer.OCX or HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMPlayer.OCX.7

So we are going to modify these, which involves rumaging a bit in the registry. For that reason, we need to make a backup of
the registry, just in case we need to revert any actions done.

So please download ERUNT and follow the instructions here for making a backup using ERUNT:

When done;

Goto Start > Run > Type: Regedit

This will open the registry editor.

Now locate either of these entries, if present;

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMPlayer.OCX
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMPlayer.OCX.7

Rightclick entry, properties, rename it by adding .old to it

Close registry editor.

Reboot and then try install Windows media player again, following the guidelines from my previous post.

I renamed the keys but it still gave me the same thing after reboot! at the end of wmp11 installation it says "it could not complete installation," blah blah you know the story!
I looked at regedit again and it had to new "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMPlayer.OCX"
"HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMPlayer.OCX.7" When i try to rename those it won't let me it says there are already some with that name!

Ughh! Maybe i did something Wrong? Everything backed up on egrunt so no worries! Get back at me when\e you can.

Instead of renaming them, you can delete them. As you have seen, they will be back again when you install WMP. Did you remember to close down all security? If you are using Windows Defender, that one should be closed also. As for the error message when you try register the DLL, it is because you need to have elevated status (admin) So log in with the admin account, and run the command again. Cheers
