Under add/remove programs there was just one that looked anything like the description provided. It was Realteck AC'97 Audio. There was no problem removing or reinstalling it. Sadly still deafening silence.

Where we are going with identifying the Brand/Model of your machine is that the machine manufacturer will have a set of basic drivers for Chipset, video, audio, USB and possibly a few others.
It may help resolve this problem if you download and install the:
Chipset Driver
audio/multimedia driver

As far as the brand goes the badge is Anitech, but I think that is just the name of the local computer store here.
