On my XP, I recently had hanging problems upon entering IE8 on XP. I realized that one or more of the Search Engine Toolbars that were updated recently was to blame. To fix this, disable the Toolbars for your Search Engines. I think it was the Microsoft's last Search Engine Toolbar update that is to blame, so you may be able to go back to a date prior to that update....but unfortunately, I think this then triggers the update to re-install itself. Disabling the toolbars for the Search Engines stopped the hanging of IE8.
