Hi there, like I said in description my battery charger is getting hot really quick it only charges 3% before cutting out I unplug it for 30 seconds or so and plug it back in and it comes back on but for only a few seconds then cuts out again. My laptop is a compaq pressario v6642em running vista don't think that really matters with this problem. Any info on this please?
Hi thanks for the welcome, although the power stays on longer when the battery is out the adapter still gets very hot within 10 minutes and the power then cuts! The battery is charging though it just doesn't get a chance only gets to 3% before the power cuts. Never happened before the laptop is sometimes on for days and the adapter has never heated up like this, cheers.
I have to wonder if the charger is becoming faulty, what you describe sounds like a thermal cut out, it's built into most things to minimise risk of permanent damage or even fire in extreme cases (which sounds like your heading toward), do you have, or can you borrow another charger ?
Should you try\get a universal charger make sure it is man enough, look at the label on the back of the laptop, your looking for the amperage required, often 10A, whatever this figure is make sure the charger can supply that, if the label does not show this info, then get the manual and look at the specification for the power, it should be listed there, once you know this figure you can get a charger capable, then see if that makes a difference, if it doesn't (eg you still get excessive heat\cut outs) then it suggests a deeper issue within the laptop itself, should this be the case your looking at getting a service centre to resolve it as it probably needs more specialist help to identify the issue, hope you get it sorted.
Adding to the above already excellent suggestions from Jephree and 8210guy…
I've had good experience by taking laptops with me when shopping for a new power supply.
I ask to "try it out" to assure that the power supply will do what it is rated to do.
So far, I haven't had objection from shops.
You may be able to run your laptop for the 10 or more minutes period when your own generally fails.
If the new one isn't over heating, and your machine is running well, you may have a solution to purchase.
Best Regards
