I started receiving this message this morning. "The file or directory C:\Documents and Settings|sherrylynne\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\I106ZOVL\videoBy Tag[1].xml is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility." I ran chkdsk, but don't know how to set the parameters, so all it runs in is "read only". No idea how to find whatever file it may have stored from this either Help, please? Thanks!
Hi sinnead.

That is in your Temporary Internet Files folder (TIF) so the first thing to do is empty it. Open IE, click on Tools then Internet Options.

Click the Delete button under Browsing History (for IE7, not sure if it's the same for IE8). Now click the Delete Files button under Temporary Internet Files, then click Yes to delete.

Now run chkdsk as follows: Click on Start then Run, type chkdsk /r and press Enter.

You will get a window that says the check could not be performed ….
Do you want to schedule this disk check to run the next time you restart the computer?
Reply y for Yes.

Shutdown and reboot. Chkdsk will start. It can take an hour or more to run depending on the size of your hard drive. Be patient and let it complete undisturbed.
It won't do it. When I type chkdsk/r, a window pops up, telling me "Windows cannot find chkdsk/r. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. No window saying it couldn't be performed, nor an option about scheduling the disk check.
One more problem! I am able to run chkdsk /r, and click Y, however, when I try to reboot, shut down, or anything else, windows tells me it can't close the window, because chkdsk isn't finished yet. I close it anyway, and reboot, but chkdsk doesn't start up. What am I doing wrong?
Hi Sinnead :wavey:

Ok, I ran chkdsk. Do I need to do anything else, or will it have taken care of everything?

Depends. Do you still get the error? If not, I see no need to run it twice, altho it wouldn't hurt for good measure :)

Cheers
No, haven't seen it. Although, yes, I'll run it again. Should I run the same thing whenever anything like that pops up? I mean chkdsk /r.

It can't hurt. CHKDSK can't repair all errors, but it is still a good tool. I use it as part as my maintenance on my machines. Running it every 3rd month or so, error or not. It keeps the HD in shape, and helps limit HD surprise-errors. Some people mean it is excessive to run it regularly, and that it contributes to wear and tear on the HD. Altho, personally I think the wear and tear is nothing more than normal use of the HD.

Heres some additional info on CHKDSK, including what it usually can repair.

Glad you got the error fixed ;)
