Thanks in Advance for even taking a look at my problem. About a month ago my computer started to pop up ads when i was online even though popup blocker was on. Then it started to have audio ads even in the middle of night sometimes in other language. I have a current subscription of ca antivirus and also adaware anniversary and run scans regular. They both found files and submitted those to them but they kept coming back. Finally I lost internet explorer and could not access the internet at all. From a laptop I contacted Microsoft tech support and was recommended to download to cd norman scanner to remove malware. Idid this and it found several files and removed them, but after the restart my bootcleaner wiped out my userinit file and ntdll64 file so everytime i log on, it logs me off in safe mode too. From your forum i found a solution and with my windows disc i replaced my userinit and can now log in safe mode but have no internet access at all. Reinstalled net adapters and says all working proper but no internet. In normal mode windows logs on but have no icons, taskbar, start menu, only task manager and it cant start explorer.exe. I downloaded hijack this to cd and ran it on the computer to post here for help. I also have the logs from the norman malware scanner as well as windows erroe reports from failed attempt to start explorer.exe. Again thanks for your help

Hello nerand

Welcome to the Whatthetech Malware Removal Forum,

All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at your own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

You have one heavily infected computer, and the main infection you have is from the Virut Virus. What this virus does is to infect every .exe file on your computer , this is not cleanable. the only option is to reformat and reinstall windows.

This system is infected with a polymorphic file infector called Virut. Virut is capable of infecting all the machine's executable files (.exe) and screensaver files (.scr). However, the problem is that the virus has a number of bugs in its code, and as a result, it may misinfect a proportion of executable files and therefore, the files are corrupted beyond repair. As of now, security experts suggest that a format and clean install, or destructive recovery if you have an OEM recovery partition, is the best way to clean the infection and it is the best and safest way to return the machine to its normal working state.

Backup all your documents and important items (personal data, work documents, etc) only. DO NOT backup any executable files (softwares) and screensavers (*.scr). It attempts to infect any accessed .exe or .scr files by appending itself to the executable.

Also, avoid backing up compressed files (zip/cab/rar) files that have .exe or .scr files inside them. Virut can penetrate and infect .exe files inside compressed files too.

Recent variants also modify htm, html, asp and php files.

Do not back up to another machine, as it may become compromised. Burn to DVD/CD, or to an external drive which has nothing else on it, and which you can format should it happen to become infected from the backups.

Ken :)
Thank you ken for your time. I was afraid this is what it came to since ive been chasing this thing some time now and was losing the battle. I started backing stuff up last night but im sure i burnt some exe files since i was coping whole folders. I will start again and be more selective this time. Great to know, I would have surely just reinfected after clean install. Again thanks for the help Ill take care of this and then reply to let you know if all goes well.
Your welcome,

Unfortunately you picked up one of the more nasty infections. Years back when I was new to computing, about the time win 95 was about to come out, kids and whackos wrote viruses, made your screen wobble or some other stupid thing, but not anymore, cyber criminals write this garbage with the only purpose of stealing anything they can from you. Don't know what your surfing habits are but you can pick this garbage up real easy by using File Sharing sites like Limewire and any of the torrents. You will almost 100% pick them up if you download any programs from sites that offer cracked versions of programs.

It would be safe to back up any photos , maybe even a document but stay away from whole programs. After you back up to a disk you need to scan that disk and make sure its ok.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 3 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Post back with a new HJT log when your done and we can take another look at it.

Safe Surfn
Ken
Hello all. I am back with a fresh windows install and many of my programs back up and running. I am replying from the once infected computer. I still have a few problems after the install however. When i start windows an error occurs saying that framedyn.dll cannot be located and reinstall might fix the problem. After clicking ok another pop up and says rundll32 cannot locate module. Ive checked in system32\dllcache but it is not there. Also i am having some trouble with drivers and wondered if any help is out there without purchase a software? I have the disks but windows does not like them. I will attach new hijackthis log for help to be sure this virut is gone since things arent quite right. Thaks so much.

Hello again, I had a chance to do all the steps listed above and got them completed. I located my CA antivirus disc and installed it, went online and did the update, rebooted and ran a full scan. CA came back and found three files on the computer that were win32\ virut .17408. The crazy thing is they are games that i had won from realarcade in the Mc Ds monopoly game over a year ago. After my format and reinstall of windows I moved NO .exe or anything but documents, pictures, and mpegs. I reinstalled all programs from original cd or online only including the games that CA found and had to clean of this darn virut. Is it possible this is still the same virus? Thanks for your help on this thing, I will have to say without hesitation you guys are saints to help us unknowing ones on your spare time.
