My system has been compromised. My Norton 2007 and Zone Alarm were shut down and key program files removed or corrupted. I was unable to boot in Safe Mode. When I tried to install other AV tools, they all failed. My network adapter seemed to be hijacked and I couldn't access the internet. I would reinstall the drivers for the network card, and when I rebooted, it was killed again. I finally used a tool to completely remove NAV, then I rebooted and reinstalled successfully. I ran a full scan with updates and found nothing. I also reinstalled Zone Alarm fine. I am online again, but I'm not sure the threats are removed. I ran HouseCall and it said I had Freeloader_Winfixer. I followed instructions to remove it, but found none of the files or extensions for it on the system. I ran Vundo Fix, and it found nothing. Then, I installed and ran Spybot, found some cookies and removed them. Installed and ran Ad-Aware, found a few items, and removed them. Ran AVG in Safe Mode, found 3 cookies, and 1 item and removed them (but it wouldn't let me print or save the report file). I rebooted and ran HIJackThis.

I am running XP Home and have current updates. I keep all antivirus and spyware sweepers updated. I just installed a Java update a few days before these problems started but nothing else.

I can now boot and all seems fine. I can boot in safe mode fine. I just don't trust I've solved the problems since it didn't appear anything major was found.

IMPORTANT: While waiting for a reply to my post, I've had two incidents you should know about: 1) NAV 2007 found Trojan.Tooso.R during a quick scan yesterday and "fully removed" it. 2) Today, a full system scan found W32.Beagle.DZ and it has been "resolved" in 1 file and 1 Browser Cache. I'm really not doing anything else on the machine, so I'm not sure how these are getting in.

cacloss :D

Welcome to Tom Coyote . Sorry about the delay in responding but we are as most times just overwhelmed with logs.

I am not looking at anything malicious on your log, not to say something could be hidden.

Do a couple of things for me

If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it during installation
Download and Install CCleaner
* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < -- After it scans your system, when you click on the Fix button and it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes
Tutorial for CCleaner

You have AVG Anti Spyware installed , make sure its setup this way, check for updates , close out the program, boot to safemode, run the scan and its important that I see the report.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <-- Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <-- Do not run the scan yet.
  • Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

There are infections being written to evade Hijackthis, so go to where you have HJT installed and right click on the HJT Icon Posted Image and rename it to Scanner.exe, run the program to Scan and Save a Log File and post a new log into this thread.

I need to see the AVG Report and a New HJT log with it renamed please.

Thanks for your help!

I Did as you asked. Below is the HJT Log (scanner.txt), the AVG log, and because they weren't listed on the AVG logfile as found, I included the info on the three WORMS that AVG found and Quarantined.

cacloss :D

I always need to see the HJT log in normal windows, when in safemode it will show the whole picture.

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Download PREVX and run the tool to remove this infection. All Anti Virus companies name the infection by different names but this is what you have.

Look for and make sure these are gone, delete them if still present.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wintems.exe
C:\Documents and settings\Owner\Application Data\hidres

Part of that infection is in the System Restore Program so lets flush it out and I can't stress enough how important it is to CREATE A NEW RESTORE POINT.

Turn off System Restore.
  • Right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.
  • Right-click My Computer.
  • ClickProperties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Create a new Restore Point <-- Very Important
  • Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember, You will have to be in Catagory View to see this
System Restore Tutorial <-- If you need it

Run this online scan from Panda, it will show if anything is still present.
Run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
  • A new window will open...click the big "Check Now" button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
  • If you are on a slow connection it will take about 15 minuites for the scanner to load.
  • Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
  • Once scan is done, click "see report" then "save report"
  • Save the log someplace you can find
  • 12. Reboot
  • Post the Panda scan results in your next reply

Let me see the Panda report and a new HJT log.

I enabled windows to show all files/folder.

The following weren't there to delete:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

PREVX found nothing initially.

These two weren't there when I did a search:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wintems.exe
C:\Documents and settings\Owner\Application Data\hidres

Created a new restore point fine.

Ran Panda's ActiveScan. Here is the report:
Incident Status Location

Virus:Trj/Mitglieder.NP Disinfected C:\WINDOWS\exefld\274140.exe
Virus:Trj/Mitglieder.NP Disinfected C:\WINDOWS\exefld\274187.exe
Virus:Trj/Mitglieder.NP Disinfected C:\WINDOWS\exefld\3824875.exe

During the above, PREVX found the following 3 items and I moved them to Jail:

Remove these with HJT.

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

If you or a Systems Admimistrator set these then leave them alone otherwise fix them
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

FlashGet download manager - the trial bundles Cydoor adware, but when you register the ads disappear
So its your call to remove or keep this program, you can remove it via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel, if you remove it these two may be gone otherwise fix them

As a precaution, lets run these files through Killbox.

Download Pocket Killbox to your desktop, unzip it to a folder that you can find

Highlight all the files with the complete path inside the quote and press Ctrl C on your keyboard.
  • C:\WINDOWS\exefld
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wintems.exe
    C:\Documents and settings\Owner\Application Data\hidres

  • Open Pocket Killbox
  • Go to File > Paste from clipboard
  • Set it to Delete on Reboot
  • Tick the box that says End Explorer shell while killing file
  • If its not greyed out..Click the radio button that say Unregister .dll before deleting.
  • Make sure ALL Files is selected
  • Click on the Red circle with the white X
  • It will ask you to confirm the deletion...Say yes
  • It will ask you to reboot, say yes
If you get a message "pending operations has been stopped by external process!" then reboot the computer manually.

How is your system running now??

I ran Killbox. It would only let me paste one item at a time. I tried various ways to get them all at once, but was unsuccessful. So, I did each one individually. I killed, shutdown, rebooted for each one.

Below if my new HJT log. Does it look clean?

cacloss :D

I apologize but I overlooked this, your running an outdated version of HJT. Do this and post a new log please.

Hijackthis 1.99.1
Its important that Hijackthis is installed in its own permanent folder for backup purposes.
  • Go to where you currently have HJT installed and delete the whole folder.
  • Use the link above or the links in my signature to download HJT 1.99.1 setup to your desktop
  • Double Click on the Setup icon and by defaut it will unzip to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis

  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread.
  • Please use Posted Imageand not Posted Image
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Then rename the new version to scanner.exe and post a new log

Your log looks fine

Malware Complaints
Are you mad ? I mean really mad, seething mad, so mad your ready to spit, mad that you have taken your hard earned dollars to buy a computer only to have some Miscredents, Dirt Bags and Cyber Criminals install a malicious program on your computer without your knowledge or consent. You can post your complaint at the above site. If you live in the U.S.A. you can also report your grievance to your State Attorney Generals Office and the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote , I'm glad I was able to help you. :D

Thank you for all of your help! Hopefully, I'll keep it free of this junk now... Can you please give me your opinion of what I should keep or not keep? I just installed 1 yr of Norton AV 2007 and Webroot Spysweeper and Windows Washer. I already use Zone Alarm. During this process I installed the following: Spybot v1.4 Ad-Aware SE v1.06 AVG Anti-Spyware ATF Cleaner Vundo Fix PREVX Killbox CCleaner HijackThis I would like to know what combination might give me the best protection without bringing my system to it's knees... BTW, Since my last post, PREVX found and jailed malware 2426718.EXE. It must still be scanning old files because I haven't downloaded anything new in two weeks... that I know of.

These are all safe to keep and won't interfere with each other

Spybot v1.4
Ad-Aware SE v1.06

This is a trail but is yours to keep after the trial, you will just lose the background guard feature. You will still be able to check for updates, run scans and remove what it finds.
AVG Anti-Spyware

PREVX Another good scanner, you can keep it but go into the Jail and delete it all. 2426718.EXE this was part of the infection we cleaned so run Prevx now and them to make sure it removes anything else it finds .

ATF Cleaner
CCleaner
Two excellent cleaners, you can keep them both and run them every week or so to keep your system free of temp files and the like.

HijackThis
I would keep this incase you ever need it in the future.

You can Remove these two
Killbox
Vundo Fix

Keep this in mind, you should only have one Anti Virus program and only one Firewall, so if you installed the complete Norton security suite that includes a firewall than you want to uninstall Zonealarm

Go ahead and install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard and also IE-Spyad , they don't scan your system but prevent a lot of the bad programs from installing.

Hope this helped :D
