Computer gone nuts

 My computer is acting crazy! About a week ago it randomly shut off and opened with a bunch of errors and would not open Windows. Every time I restarted it, it gave a different errors. After about 9 tries, it opened Windows with some pop up errors. It has been working fine since then.. until today. It did the same thing today but with completely different errors.

Some of the errors that have come up:

When restarting:
Check harddrive, various harddrive errors
Checksum something, Corrupt file so can not load (one of these files was called comdlg32.dll)
Bad image

Pop up windows after Windows finally loads:
Can not find NAVAP
Access to the specified device, path, or file is denied (when trying to open Control Panel)
mshta.exe must be closed

Since all of this has happened, I have downloaded a virus protection that is provided free from our university. I just ran AdAware and deleted some files, but when I do this the Symantec file (from my university) was trying to stop it's progress so I'm not sure how much good it did.

**Also, I have been getting popup windows that say Check the IP address like someone is trying to use it or that my computer is not secure. This may be related to our Linksys wireless router. I plan on trying to call them and go through the set up cd again to see if I can change the security settings.

Here is my Hijackthis log (ran after I scanned with Adaware):

 I appreciate absolutely any help that you can give me! I have no clue what to do! Thank you in advance!!!
Hello , welcome to the TC.

You can use windows sfc (system file checker) You'd need your Windows CD to make this work.
Click Start> Run> type sfc /quiet Note the space.
(Note that there is a space between sfc and /quiet)

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen…ef_tts_paix.asp

sfc /quiet - In Windows 2000 this sets Windows File Protection to replace any incorrect system files detected with the appropriate version from the dll cache without any user notification.

If this works:

Important: Do this before any fix.

You need to update your version of HijackThis. Open HJT> Open Misc Tools> Pull the side bar down> Check for update online. If that doesn't work, download it from my signature and remove the hijackThis.exe you have now.

Also please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

After the above:

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

1. Launch Ad-Aware SE and run the WebUpdate feature. (Click on the Globe icon > Click connect > Click OK > Click Finish.)
2. Set up the Configurations as follows:
– Click the Gear wheel at the top of the Ad-Aware window
– Click General > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
– Click Tweak > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".
3. Click "Proceed"
4. Click "Scan Now"
5. Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
6. Select "Search for low-risk threats"
7. Run the scanner using the Full Scan (Perform full system scan) mode.
8. When the scan has completed, select Next.
9. In the Scanning Results window, select the "Scan Summary" tab.
10. Check the box next to each "target family" you wish to remove.
11. Click next > Click OK.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thank you so much for your reply! Now back to the first step.. Went to Run & typed "sfc /quiet". Hit ok. A screen flashes (for less than a second) and then disappears. Nothing comes up saying it was run or anything. How can I tell if it ran before I move onto the other steps?
By the way, my Windows cd is in the computer, but that drive does not always run correctly. Should I type D:\ before it?
Some weird popups keep happening. One came up saying Buddy.exe is being monitored - possible threat. Same the same thing for datasor.ll & then came up later saying it had to be removed. I have scanned with Symantec, Adaware, and Search & Destroy. Any info on this? Also, I found the command prompt, went to C:\WINNT\system32 & typed sfc /quiet from there. It said it had to be restarted for any changes to talk place. It wouldn't come on for the last 3 days (until today) without those errors so I was really nervous about restarting, but it did come back on. I'm still not sure if the sfc worked though. Is there any way to tell?
Still not sure if SFC worked because it never said a confirming message or anything. But my computer is coming on, and seems to be moving at about the normal speed.

I did everything you said, and below is my Hijackthis log.

When I turn on my computer, it starts with a NAVAP error which I believe is related to a conflict with Symantec that I downloaded from my univerity's website. I think both are trying to open initially and something is going wrong there, but I dont know how to stop it.

The last 3 times that I have turned on/ restarted my computer, it has actually come on. If you would have told me this yesterday, I would have never believed it because I thought my hard drive was gone for good. Hopefully the sfc helped this? I have not seen an NTDETECT virus all day, and my computer seems to be running normally again. Although, I doubt it will continue.

I appreciate everything thus far and anything you can do with my hijackthis log! Thanks!
I suggest you do this:

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

My computer seems to be running a little slower when trying to open programs and when shutting down (during "Saving Settings") or when restarting, whether relevant or not. I'm just so happy to see it on today!!! Also, the loading of programs being slower may be because I still have the "Show hidden files" setting still on since I went into safe mode. Other than that, it's up and running without any weird errors or anything.

:weee:

A few random questions for you:
- On average, how long would you say a Dell computer typically lasts?
- I can no longer update my Norton Antivirus for free. I have been attempting to use my university's free Symantec antivirus, but it must not be working very well if the virus program you recommended found stuff anyway. What would you suggest I do to protect my computer?

Thank you SO MUCH

That's really hard to say. It always seems the computer is out dated after a few years. You can always try more memory if your PC has room for more. Plus your Windows 2000 OS is a little old now also.

Nortons is good but takes a lot of resources to run. I can just suggest to you what I would do if the PC was mine. I will post some free programs you can get and one is a Anti-Virus program. I would download it and update it. Then I would un-install Nortons / Symantic.

Some of these suggestions might also help.

Good Job

Log looks good :D  How is it running any issues?

1.Do one of the following:
In Windows 98/Me/2000, on the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.
In Windows XP, on the taskbar, click Start > My Computer.

2.Do one of the following:
In Windows 98, on the View menu, click Folder Options.
In Windows Me/2000/XP, on the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, check Hide file extensions for known file types.

3.Do one of the following:
In Windows 98, in the Advanced Settings box, under the "Hidden files" folder, unclick Show all files.
In Windows Me/2000/XP, check Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, unclick Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
Thank you! You are awesome! My computer is not acting funny now, but it has been acting weird off and on for a couple of weeks and then all of a sudden wouldn't come on anymore a few days ago. I'll be keeping a close watch though! I will check out these antivirus programs! Thanks - greatly appreciated! Yea, my computer was bought in 2002, and if it can last me til May (when I graduate) I'll be happy and will let it peacefully go to Computer Heaven, but I refuse to let it go until then!
