my pc upon selecting the user name on startup flashes the desktop screen for a split second and then logs off. does the same thing in safe mode. so i am not able to run any type of scan or cleaner…….is this just a lost cause?…..and format is the only alternative?
It sounds like something may have deleted a file called userinit.exe, or the registry key that points to it - OOOPS! Did you run a scan with anything that found something that was fixed?
If it's just the file that is missing, it may be possible to replace it if you have a Windows CD that you can boot from or you can slave the drive to another PC.
If it's the registry, then you are probably looking at a reformat.
