On a program I downloaded, I was looking through the security section when I saw this: "Account Unknown(S-1-5-21-4270539076-3919665659-468…)" It has 'Special Permissions' and nothing else. Is this a huge concern?
Greetings Little 1994,

Its understandeable that in these malware times you are concerned about it.
But in most cases with a Unknown Account SID (Security Identifier), it is benign.
It probably once belonged to a now deleted account, and when Windows no
longer can see the account, it labels it unknown.

It is safe to remove it. Simply right-click the folder where you found it, choose
properties, click the security Tab, then Edit / Remove.

You might get the message that you can't, because it is inherited. To fix this, simply
go a folder up in the tree, and do the procedure again, keep doing this until you are
allowed.

Admin rights are usually required. You also might need to take ownership of the folder
in question. Below is a link on how to do that in Vista.

Could it disappearing on it's own be a bad sign, or am I in the clear?

Oh so sorry if I got you worried. No its perfectly ok and you should
be in the clear. Sometimes "problems" just go away, often after a
reboot or such. So no need to worry ;)

Cheers
