Strange computer behavior

I have a Windows XP SP3 computer that has started behaving strangely. I orignally posted to the Windows forum since I can't seem to successfully run a HJT log right now, and since the behavior seems to be limited to this one login, but it was suggested I post here instead..

This computer has multiple logins, The accound "Dad" is an administrator account and seems to be behaving normally (or at least the things I describe below don't happen in this account). The account "Mom" is also an adminstrator account and has started behaving strangely. I started looking at it because "Mom" was complaining about slow connections to the internet and occasions where IE would not connect until she rebooted.

The first thing I tried to do was run MBAM, which I had installed on this computer from the Dad account some months ago. To my chagrin, it wouldn't run, but instead complained that it couldn't find it. So, I uninstalled (from the Dad account) and tried to reinstall from the Mom account, getting the error in attachment 1.

I then tried to run a HJT log to post here, and got the error in attachment 2. (I am, however, able to log into the Dad account and run a log).

Lastly, I tried to navigate to the C:\Program Files folder manually, and when I click on it get the error in attachment 3. I tried going into the Dad account, setting the Mom account to a Limited account, then back to an Adminstrator account to see if that would fix it, but no joy.

Any help or guidance would be appreciated.
Hi, sorry about the delay, we are very busy at the moment.

I am, however, able to log into the Dad account and run a log

Can you post the HijackThis log from the "Dad" account? That will give us somewhere to start with.

Also, please try the following scan from any Administrator account. It may or may not work because of the issues you are having, but its worth a shot.

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done two logs should open:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scrolling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
Thanks.
Here's the HJT Log run from the Dad account:

Hi,

I notice you have some components from Symantec/Norton on your computer. Are these leftovers of a previous installation or are they part of something you have currently?

Please click Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs. Find and Remove these old versions of Java:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.0_01
Javaβ„’ 6 Update 2
Javaβ„’ 6 Update 3
Javaβ„’ 6 Update 5
Javaβ„’ 6 Update 7
Javaβ„’ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Make sure you leave Javaβ„’ 6 Update 13 alone as it is the latest.

Disable Windows Defender.

Open Windows Defender.

Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Open HijackThis. Hit Do A System Scan Only. Place a check next to the following items (if present):
O16 - DPF: {E06E2E99-0AA1-11D4-ABA6-0060082AA75C} -

Close all browsers and windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

1. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK.

2. Then copy and paste the content of the following codebox into Notepad:

@echo off
sc stop pfsvgae
sc delete pfsvgae
del /Q %0
3. Save the file to your DESKTOP as "fix.bat". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Once saved, the icon to click should look like this on your desktop: [external image: Posted Image]

4. Double click fix.bat.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF CleanerΒ»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Please run DDS again after these steps and then post the first log it gives (DDS.txt). Let me know if there is any change to your computer's behaviour, and try running MalwareBytes' AntiMalware again.

Thanks.
Ok, I have removed all the extra Java updates as instructed. The 016 has been fixed in using HJT, and I created and ran the fix.bat file in the Dad account. ATF Cleaner was run in both the Dad account and the Mom account. MBAM runs fine in the Dad account, but will not run in the Mom account – same symptoms as in the initial post, the Mom account does not appear to have permission to even read the C:\Program Files folder.

Here is the DDS.txt as run from the Dad account:

I have not yet reenabled real-time protection in Windows Defender; awaiting additional instructions.

Thanks very much.
Nothing bad is showing in your logs, I take it MalwareBytes' isn't finding anything?

Let's do a couple more scans just in case Malware is behind it. Do you have any other reason to suspect Malware, any other suspicious behaviour?

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any
"<β€” ROOKIT" entries unless advised!

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
  • Click NO
  • In the right panel, you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked … leave everything checked and ensure the Show all box is un-checked.
  • Now click the Scan button.
Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "GMER.txt"
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
Post the contents of GMER.txt in your next reply.

Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Un-checked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Re-enable your Anvirisus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.
Thanks.
First, let me deal with your questions:

I notice you have some components from Symantec/Norton on your computer. Are these leftovers of a previous installation or are they part of something you have currently?

I use Norton Save & Restore to back this system up onto an external hard-drive.

Nothing bad is showing in your logs, I take it MalwareBytes' isn't finding anything?

Correct, MalwareBytes (run from the Dad account) doesn't find anything. I've been unsuccessful in trying to run it from the Mom account. I haven't seen any real major suspicious behavior on this system, except the issue noted in my original post, where the Mom account doesn't seem to have permissions in the C:\Program Files folder. It does occasionally have to be rebooted in order to connect to the internet, and it sometimes complains about Virtual memory being low when logging in to the Mom account.

Now – on to the scans from your previous post.

The GMER Rootkit scanner ran for HOURS – seemed to me to be doing a full scan. It never indicated anything indicating possible rootkit activity found, nor did it ask me if I wanted it to do a full scan. And, in the end, it did not produce a log. :pullhair:

Then I tried to go the the Eset website to do the online scan. I had to change my IE settings to get him to even allow me to install the Active-X, originally he wouldn't do it even when I said to allow it, because it wasn't signed. Then, once I got it to install, I end up with the screen shown in the attached screen shot, which doesn't leave me with the option to click Start. I can't figure out what else needs to change in my IE settings to get past this…..

Thanks for your continued help!
Hi,

Sorry about the delay, was at a Funeral+Wake all day yesterday.

That's strange, GMER doesn't usually take that long. Let's try a different Rootkit scan instead.

Please download RootRepeal to your desktop
  • Unzip it to it's own folder, close all other programs especially your security programs (anti-spyware, anti-virus, and firewall) and run RootRepeal.exe
  • Click the Report tab at the bottom and then the Scan button.
  • A box will pop up, check the boxes beside Drivers, Files, Processes and click OK.
  • Another box will open, check the boxes beside all the drives, eg : C:\, then click OK.
  • The scan will take a little while to run, so let it go unhindered.
  • Once it is done, click the Save Report button, call it RepealScan and save the log to your desktop. Post that log here in your reply

ESET sometimes can be problematic, can you try this online scan instead:Please run this online scan, using Internet Explorer with Administrator priviledges (Vista users right-click and select Run As Administrator…):

Panda Activescan
  • Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan now button
  • When prompted to install ActiveX control click Install
  • On the update page, click on the security warning at the top of the page and select "Run ActiveX control…"
  • Panda should now start scanning your system.
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the Export To…(with a little notepad icon) button, then Save the report to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log.

Thanks.
Hi jpshortstuff:

No problem with the delay, I completely understand. My sympathies in this time.

I was not able to run RootRepeal. When I tried to do so, I got the error message shown in the attachment. Behaviour was the same when I downloaded, unpacked, and ran from Mom account and when I downloaded, unpacked, and ran from Dad account.

Here is the Activescan log from Panda:

Thanks for your help.
Hi,

Hmm, its a little strange that these Rootkit scans are failing. I want you to try one more:

Download Rooter.exe to your desktop
  • Then doubleclick it to start the tool
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt. Post that here
The Panda scan doesn't show much bad, but it may be worth cleaning out your Email Trash can as it found some stuff there.

Cheers.

Hi :)

There seems to be nothing at all Malicious in your logs. There is a possibility that the "Mum" account has become corrupted in some way. The only solution that comes to my mind would be to create a new profile and migrate the documents and anything you need over to the new profile, and rename that to "Mum". However, I am sure there is a better solution.

At this time, I recommend you head to out Tech Team for assistance as this problem seems to be non-Malware related. Post a new topic in this forum:
http://forums.whatthetech.com/Microsoft_Windows_f119.html
Explaining what the problems is. Let them know you have been given the all clear on the Malware side of things.

Sorry I couldn't help any more, but as I say this doesn't seem to be Malware related.

Thanks.
