My pc is painfully slow I NEED HELP Not sure if this is the right Forum location. About a year ago I succesfully used this site to get rid of Virtumonde and other spyware. Not sure why I click a key stroke and it takes 5 seconds for my PC to recognize it. Could it be spyware? Could it be a registry issue? I don't know and I'm reluctant to do anything for fear I'll really screw something up. Here are some facts Dell PC with 80 GB Hard drive, 72 GB used Running ZoneAlarm Running Avast Had Spyware Dr at one time but did not renew because It slowed my pc to turtle speed Running Spybot S&D I know Avast and ZoneAlarm don't always play well together but I'm not sure that's it HELP where do I start Thanks mjv Also I have a teenager who down loads on occasion, runs ITunes which I think is a hog

Hi,

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Post that log back here.

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done two logs should open:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scrolling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
Thanks.
ATF did not seem to run
tried it three times Task Manager indicated it was not responding, could be that the pc is so slow

Hi,

Well, your logs don't show any signs of Malware, so I don't think that is the issue here.

Click Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs. Find these items on the list and remove them:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java™ 6 Update 3

(They are old Java versions, we will install the latest shortly.)

While you are in this list, see if you can see any programs that you don't use or need. If you can, consider Removing them, to clear up some space (and possibly resources if they have unneeded components running). Reboot your computer after uninstalling programs.

Installing Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u12-windowsi586.exe to install the newest version.

As I say, this doesn't look like a Malware issue to me. Take a look at this great guide for slow running computers:
http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials/runningslowly.php
This guide starts with instructions for cleaning temp files, which is what ATF-Cleaner was for. Not sure why it didn't run, as you say could just be that your computer was so bogged down.

Feel free to ask any questions as and when you have them.

Thanks.
