Hello! I'm new to the forum, and im wondering if any of you experts could help me? I posted my problem on another forum and one of the members told me to come here! Basically.. My son installed some program he downloaded off the net a while back (21st December) It was a Nero DVD Burning software, but seeing as it is not freeware he tried to find a keygen for it, the search led him to a site which claimed to have the keygen, however whenever he downloaded it it was some sort of virus which caused the laptop to totally slow down, The PC takes about 10 minuste to turn on and more than 2 programs cant be opened at once. I ran AVG, Spybot - Search and Destroy and Lavasoft Adaware to try and remove it. spybot and adaware just found the usual stuff it finds which dont normally affect the PC, however the AVG scan found a couple of virus's which i let remove in the hope it solved the problem. I believe the virus is still here (though im not certain) and i've tried everything i can think of! I checked the processes running and processes which start up with the computer and everything is normal, there is nothing extraordinary in the program files or windows folder AND System restore didn't work, it said the computer could not restore itself, and now i cant try it again as the pc seems to delete previous restore points in the new year which isnt much use as it happened in December. I managed to find the AVG logs and it says the virus found was.. Trojan horse Downloader.Generic3.DTC and it was found in.. C:\ System Volume Information\_restore{202550A8-7A33-4BCA-9586-051D24DDBF8F}\RP150\A0044016.exe I have also ran a Hijackthis scan. The details of this are below. Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 23:39:07, on 09/01/2007 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.5730.0011) I can post the rest of the log if needed! ThankyouThankyouThankyou If anyone can help! I cant take it anymore!
Hi dgolf,

Yes, post the entire HJT log please so we can see what is happening. And that trojan that was found was in a restore point which is common with many infections, so you don't really want to use them in many cases. Again, post the whole log and I'll see if I can help.

Thank you,
Dave

Hi dgolf,

I'm not seeing anything malicious in the log at this point.

I do have one major observation though. There appears to be two Anti-Virus programs running real time protection, Bit Defender and AVG. This can cause many issues including system slow down, conflicts, ect…
You can keep both installed but just use one for real-time scanning and disable the other. The disabled program can still be used for one-time scans.

In general you never want to run 2 Anti-Virus or Firewall programs at the same time. Other types of Spyware protection, ect… is usually OK (and recommmended) to have multiple programs running.

Let's try downloading and running AVG Anti-Spyware to see what we find and go from there.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program. The program can still be used after 30 days but loses some of the features such as real time scanning.
  • Load AVG Anti-Spyware and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Then click on the Scanner tab at the top. Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and click Automatically generate report after every scan. Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVG Anti-Spyware will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  • Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot!
Please post the AVG report and a new HJT log, along with letting me know how things are running, especially since turning off one of the AV's.

Regards,
Dave

Hi dgolf, Mostly harmless stuff found in the AVG log. Are you still having problems? If so please give some details as to what is going on now. Thanks, Dave
Laptop is still acting the same as before. Takes a good while to start up fully and to run programs, it can also not run more than a few programs at once. for example, if i am listening to a song in media player and go top open up a program such as firefox the song would break up and sometimes stop until firefox had opened! i was wondering is it possible for the virus to have done permanent damage to any hardware which is why it is so slow?
Hi dgolf,

i was wondering is it possible for the virus to have done permanent damage to any hardware which is why it is so slow?

In short, no, I have never seen a virus to any kind of permanent damage to hardware. If the virus, or whatever malicious code that existed, is still present than it's effects will be felt, and it can still do harm. Now, there may be something we are not seeing going on and we can run some scans for that. Let's also try running ATF Cleaner:

Use ATF Cleaner to remove temp files, cookies, cache, ect…

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main select the following:
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Let's also try Silent Runners to see if anything is hiding:
Please Click Here a to download Silent Runners.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • Click Yes when it asks you if you would like to skip the supplementary search.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click the new text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

The other issue that I see quite a bit of…both here and in my regular "PC support work" is either inadequate hardware or a poorly maintained PC (ie. hard drive needs to be defraged, hard drive full, too many items running at startup, ect…ect…ect…). There are some items/programs I see in your HJT log that do not need to be run at startup. And I will advise you on those, which may help some.

The other issue is hardware, mainly RAM and CPU. How much RAM do you have? How much free Hard Drive space do you have? To check RAM and CPU: Right or Alt click on My Computer and select properties. At the bottom of the main screen it will show you the CPU and RAM. To check your hard drive, or drives. Open My Computer and Right or Alt click on the drive. It will show you how much space is used and free.

Here is a great link to helpful information on speeding up performance.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/s…estoreperf.mspx

Try the tips there, run ATF Cleaner and Silent Runners (give me a log), and post back with your hardware specs. and we can go from there. I'll post back with items that can be eliminated from running at startup. My personal preference is to run NOTHING that is not needed. IE…the only thing that runs at startup for me is my AV, AS, and firewall protection….NOTHING ELSE. Everything else can be started manually when needed. And I have 1gig of RAM.

Regards,
Dave
Hi dgolf,

These are all optional items that can be "fixed" with HJT. I prefer to use msconfig to stop things from running at start up but this will work also.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SigmatelSysTrayApp] stsystra.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [igfxtray] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [igfxpers] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [igfxhkcmd] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DLA] C:\WINDOWS\System32\DLA\DLACTRLW.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

To use msconfig click Start->Run, type in msconfig and click OK. Click on the startup tab and you can selectively choose what starts when you turn on your computer. The items above should show in there also. These items will still be available but don't need to run automatically in the background every time you use your computer.

Hopefully these tips will speed you up a bit…if not you may be looking at upgrading hardware.

Regards,
Dave
I ran ATF cleaner and I think everything is fine now! Computer is running just as it used to! well, just a wee bit slower, but most of the problem has left.

I also ran silent runners, the log if which is below..

"Silent Runners.vbs", revision 49, http://www.silentrunners.org/

I defrag reguarly and tried it a couple of days ago to no effect. I have 512mb of ram, though the onboard graphics card uses some of this (im not sure how much)

My CPU is An Intel Celeron M 1.6ghz, and i have a 60gb hard drivewith 24.7GB free space.

I also took your advice and used msconfig to stop as many processes running at startup.

Do you think that it could be in the all clear now?

Thank you very much for taking time to help me out, It's really appreciated!

Darren.
Here's my new HT log too!

Hi dgolf,

Glad to hear things are running better. Your logs appear clean. ATF Cleaner is a great tool to use on a regular basis. I run it about once a week or so. Helps keep things humming along.

Your hardware looks good. The integrated graphics will use some of your memory but you should be OK unless you use your PC for gaming, high end graphics work, ect…

It looks like you have some good protection in place. You can keep AVG AS. It will run after the 30 day trial but won't provide real time scanning. Just keep it updated. I use it and run it also about once a week.

Here is a great link to a post here on securing your PC after an attack.
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?show…mp;#entry257163

Common sense is also one of the best tools in preventing Malware infections. Hopefully your son learned a bit of a lesson and won't download any more "free" stuff (it's never free…trust me). But that is sometimes the best way to learn about these things.

EDIT: Forgot to mention you should update your Java:
Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Enviroinment (JRE) 6, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop (12.6 MB).
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windowsi586.exe to install the newest version.
SECOND EDIT: (Still asleep I think)…
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which may be infected anyway).

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Select Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.
Regards,
Dave
