Hello tuxedo

The sound issue that you seem to be experiencing may be an issue at either end of the communication.
1st we must check that your end is functioning correctly.

To do this please follow as listed below:
  • Open Windows Live Messenger
  • Click on the Menu
  • Open Tools
  • Select Audio and Video Setup
  • For your speaker~
  • Click on Test (You should hear clean & clear sound)
  • Now click Stop
  • For your Microphone~
  • Record your normal speaking voice into the mic and play back(You should hear your voice just the way you recorded it)

Alternatively….
If I have misunderstood the version or type of messenger that you have,

Please follow as listed below:
  • Click Start
  • then Run…
  • now type dxdiag into the open box & click OK
  • Select the Network Tab
  • Now find the "DirectX features" and click on DirectPlay Voice Options
  • Click Run Wizard ( Please Read the Sound Hardware Test Wizard Dialog Box before proceeding )
  • Click Next and follow the simple direction to test your microphone only.
  • When finished please do not attempt any other tests or disable other settings whilst using this feature.

Please post back into this thread to let us know how you went.
Also can you include the version and type of messenger that you are using, thanks.
